Why not? You can GF suet. I used to make and sell GF and DF mince pies .. and the mincemeat you make yourself is not only a piece of piss to make, but is infinitely better than anything you'd buy in a jar anyway ;)

I didn't know that you could get GF suet but then I'm still discovering what products are out there. I wouldn't know where to start with making my own mincemeat outside of buying the dried fruits (what fruits go into mincemeat anyway?) and the suet.

I'm hopeless with baking.

I'll send you a recipe. It's just a matter of chopping apples (don't even have to peel them), grating rind of and squeezing some lemons and oranges, shoving them in a large bowl with the dried fruits, sugar, spices and nuts .. leaving it over night, then the next day putting it all in an ovensafe bowl and shoving it, covered, in the oven for about 3 hours at a low temp. Cooling a bit, stirring and shoving in jars. Keeps indefinitely. But requires no baking skills at all ;) If you can open packets, grate and squeeze the citrus, handle a small knife, stir, and carry to and from an oven you're in clover ;)

You mean your not running with a selfie pole? What's wrong with you!

chairboys 18 Sep 2014 14:18

Phew!!!
My hamstring has suddenly been cramping up constantly over the last day or so. I've worried it may knock my participation on Saturday. My work colleague (who's also running) is much amused and says it's just a wimp-out.
So, an hour ago I set off on a light, loosener believing it'd ease the spasm. Got 50 yards down my road and had to pull-up. Not happy one jot.
Emergency action required.
On the off chance, I've sped up to a nearby sports clinic. Luckily, it was a walk-in surgery. I've explained my predicament.
He asked only two questions, "Do you run on pavements and are you right handed" to both of which I replied "Yes".
Before you could say Sebastian Newbold Coe he had me straddling his couch.
Two hefty yanks of my back later I was on my way.
He explained how he'd released the elastic band!
What a guy. Said he was a runner also and didn't charge me.
First time ever I've used one of these places. So glad I did.
Will need to buy him a bottle of wine after the race.

tonyloaf 18 Sep 2014 18:08

Also until the race keep your salt levels high, it's proven lack of salt can do this, you will burn it all away anyway ,
Also keep the hamstring warm, hot water bottles on it as much as you can along with performing hamstring development stretches

thought I'd go for a gentle one ( sport's chap said give it half hour, I played safe with five hours) but ping!
got a few yards further than earlier but aborted as a precaution.

Sounds rather suspicious to me Mr Chairboys.
I wish you all the best sir. Can I sponsor you? In your current predicament may I suggest £5.00 if you make it to the end of the road?

Considering the fact that pirate speak is not all that different from the Westcountry accent, I don't think I'd find it all that difficult to talk like a pirate. ;)

Nice all you can eat buffet today at Peach Keens today. Ate a bit too much.

Also saw Guardians of the Galaxy at last.

melon 21 Sep 2014 15:24

I saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tonight.

I saw it back when I was a kid, all of 2 or 3 years old. My family and friends of took up a whole row ha ha. Fat Cat (character from a kids show here) was there because it was a special charity premiere screening.... and I ran riot ha ha. I could run freely from one end of the row to the other because we had the whole thing. Wish I could remember it! 23 adults taking one kid to see a movie. Priceless.

Anyway, I wasn't disappointed with this movie, I thought it was fun.

There was a great story on Radio 2 in the UK about a guy and his girlfriend who had been saving up for years to go to a BS gig and finally there dream came true. They had spent all there money getting flights to USA for a gig at madison square gardens and the only show tickets they could afford where right at the back up in the heavens. When they got there they were just thrilled to be at the show even though they were so far away.
As they were sitting down a man approached them and told them that he could get better seats than that and handed over a wristband and told them to make there way to the bottom level.
Would you of handed over your tickets to a complete stranger???
Anyway it ended up that this guy had given them front row tickets and VIP treatment!!!!! all for nothing.
Apparently BS is known for this type of thing and sends out 'spotters' to do just this.
Fantastic.

Yep, we call it being "MIB'd"- the guys are usually wearing black. :-)

The guy in the story was in the "Springsteen and I" movie, which while it has a few awkward (IMO) segments, it also has a few really good stories, such as the above, and the street busker who got Bruce to play with him out on the sidewalk, and a hilarious guy whose wife dragged him around to shows. Unfortunately, the version of the film that's out on TV/DVD doesn't have the epilogue (I believe), which is the best part, IMO, when they surprised a few of the fans in the film with a meeting with Bruce himself.

Because my funds are quite limited at the moment, I could only afford to either go to Birmingham to see Queen in concert or to go to London to see Meat on the West End. I know Meat's dates haven't yet been announced but I didn't want to lose out on the chance to go because I hadn't taken the costs into account. I didn't ever want to get to the point where I had to decide between the artists that I like but needs must. ;)

In the end I decided on saving the funds for London because as well as the show, it will be the celebration to mark the end of my time with The Open University.

I'd have loved to have been able to have seen them when Freddie was alive but from what I've read of the reviews Adam Lambert is quite good.

However a decision had to be made because the tickets for the Queen show went on pre-sale yesterday and if I was going to go, I'd have wanted to get tickets fairly early on to be in with a chance of getting a reasonable seat.

Better to save your pennies for Meat I think  Adam Lambert is competent, but lacks soul. It's a bit like watching a tribute band (I'd prefer just Brian and Roger singing to be honest!).

Yeah, I can see what you mean.

I can get tickets for a tribute band for about £10 so I think I've made the right choice.

Ah incorrect.

Arms must be raised to 60 degrees. Lifting the arms vertically could result in the flare landing on you if the wind drops. You it's also avert your face when you are firing.
