No according to proper British Grammar rules.

If the word has more than one syllable, "er" or "est" ending are to be replaced with the words "more" and "most"

And then again...it was a few years since I've been to school...

No, still allowed.

short adjectives: add "-er"

Short adjectives
1-syllable adjectives
old, fast
2-syllable adjectives ending in -y

long adjectives: use "more"

Long adjectives
2-syllable adjectives not ending in -y
modern, pleasant
all adjectives of 3 or more syllables

Clever is 2 syllables and doesn't end in "y"

AndyK 09 Nov 2007 15:50

Actually you're both right ...

Quote:

With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use '-er' or 'more':
quiet > quieter/more quiet
clever > cleverer/more clever
narrow > narrower/more narrow
simple > simpler/more simple
But I knew that because I'm more clever than the pair of you :p

Let me check something, my dear sir...

Oh...you're a super mod and admin...

Yes, sir...you're the most cleverest and the most handsomest and the most fairest and the most...ummm...yeah...

mszee 09 Nov 2007 15:56

OK...I just found a hole in that grammar rule - is that an exception?

Lovely - loveliest.

Isn't this one 3 syllables?

AndyK 09 Nov 2007 17:12

If it ends in y then the y is replaced with an i before adding the er or est

What confused me is that it says that 3 syllables and up are long...regardless how they end...
