Any ideas where this is?

A friend at work was sorting through some slides the other night and came across this old picture, and he's now trying to locate where it is.

So for we've narrowed it down to somewher in the US. can anyone help pin point it more accurately?

Andy have you got a larger version of this picture? It looks like there is writing on top of that building, and reading it might make it a bit easier to identify?

is there a prize by the way if anyone solves this? ;)

It says "A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year"

Does that narrow it down a bit?

Andy, so far no luck...looks a bit like a chopped up Empire State Building...thought it's a Plaza Hotel but that doesn't seem to be it either...every time idea pops into the head, when looked in Google it's different image altogether...

AndyK 25 Nov 2008 16:51

There'll be a similar prize to the caption competition thread I posted so long ago :p

Can't work out if it's buildings on a hill behind the main building or lights on towerblocks ... so that's no help :))

mszee 25 Nov 2008 17:02

You know what is weird (yes, I know - it's me, so this is your second guess)...look carefully at the cars...is it me or do they look kinda oldish???

daveake 25 Nov 2008 17:07

Well, Andy did say "old picture" so I guess it's not that weird :-).

But yes, I noticed that too :-)

Another thing for me is parking in front of the building...or at least it looks like a parking...maybe it's not NYC...

~Helen~ 25 Nov 2008 17:33

I set a colleague on the task...had too much to do, sorry! if she solves the mystery though I will let you know!

Really...you're a miserable bastid...what I guess I wanted to say was that besides NYC I don't know much about big American Cities...not enough to recognize this building in any event...

Chris

Monstro 26 Nov 2008 00:44

nope

mszee 26 Nov 2008 00:51

Well, I don't think it's NYC either...

duke knooby 26 Nov 2008 00:52

i think its wherever he set it... mustta had it to post the pic here

Monstro 26 Nov 2008 03:04

no idea

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 11:41

It's been found!

And it isn't where you'd think it is :))

Monstro 26 Nov 2008 11:45

I don't think it's anywhere

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 11:54

After a nght of youtube headphones and booze it's a wonder you can remember to type let alone think about places.

Monstro 26 Nov 2008 12:03

multi talented me lol

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 12:29

Can we have a clue? What Country are we looking in?

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 12:29

Or if needs be, what continent...?? Pleasey!!

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 13:03

A clue, hmmm

This buildings neighbour used to be the "Listening Bank" ...

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 13:45

Hmmmm....cryptic clues!

You realise this is keeping myself and colleagues from our work today and yesterday?!!

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 13:58

They're only cryptic if you can't work them out logically.

mszee 26 Nov 2008 13:58

YOU are doing this at work? We've been doing this shite all night last night...

It does look like the States. Note the sign: Merry Christmas. The rest of the world is calling it Happy Christmas.

Another clue we think is that this is a hotel.

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 14:00

You're way off the mark Zina. Way off.

mszee 26 Nov 2008 14:00

Jeez, I just read the entire thread...

Andy...give off or else!!!

Let me just find that emoticon with a baseball bat...let me just find it, Andy...

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:01

Andy am I anywhere near the mark with knowing where the listening bank's HQ was/is now?

mszee 26 Nov 2008 14:02

Only Brits or other non-Americans can have a "listening bank" whatever the heck...

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:11

You have the listening bank I think, but I don't think you got it 'til it stopped being the listening bank. If that makes sense.

mszee 26 Nov 2008 14:12

All I know that I am not talking to Andy until he says what it is...hours and hours wasted and it's still a frigging riddle...

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 14:19

Depends on the location and the HQ you're thinking of ... you could be dead on or you could be many many miles off.

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:24

Andy.......I am furtively searching google images for something that matches up to something in this picture.......is said listening bank neighbour VISIBLE in this picture?

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 14:28

In answer to your question, Yes it is!

However, apologies where they're due, my clue missed a couple of vital words to make it correctly cryptic. It should read

This buildings neighbour used to be next to the "Listening Bank"

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:38

so the listening bank isn't in the picture?

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:39

ps, my colleague is going insane trying to work this out, i think she wants to kill me/you!

I didn't say that ...

~Helen~ 26 Nov 2008 14:53

Aaaah in that case I AM looking for HQ in which case.....

http://media.mlxxfc.net/Building.jpg

I won't spoil it for everyone else though :-P

mszee 26 Nov 2008 15:40

I've been just advised that Dant796 figured it out too...so there, Andy...take THAT...

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 15:56

I can only take your word for that Zina ... where's his proof? :p

mszee 26 Nov 2008 16:13

You know I am a spokesman...you want a PM?

Someone's been looking on Wikipedia ;-)

I dunno, Mr Mod Sir says it's in the USA then lets everyone tear their hair out trying to find the place, without ever mentioning it wasn't even in the same continent.

I guess he's the "Mod That Likes To Say as little as possible" ;-)

Dave

mszee 26 Nov 2008 16:39

I have now MORE proof but Dant796 is already right according to PM...so...whatever...will send MORE proof to Mr. K.

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 16:40

At the time of posting we did think it was in the USA, but it wasn't, isn't and is unlikely to ever be located there, even if it is so "local". ;)

Here's another pic:

http://tressillian.files.wordpress.c...k1946-hsbc.jpg

All of these photos seem to be quite old. Wonder why ...

Dave

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 17:00

Probably because it's still as local, but bigger than it used to be. Albeit with less ears ;)

RadioMaster 26 Nov 2008 17:04

you really like doing that, dont you? ;twisted:

daveake 26 Nov 2008 17:06

I think that everyone who has figured this out should make this sign ...

http://jeroenarendsen.nl/pics/OK-man.jpg

But not in Brazil, apparently ...

Dave

AndyK 26 Nov 2008 17:13

:lmao:

Dave, you're not the First to get there, but I'm not sure who was the most Direct.
