Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen's 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' on Nov 16. The Deluxe Package comprises over six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. The media contents are packaged within an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen and never-before-seen photographs. Containing a wealth of previously unreleased material, 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' offers an unprecedented look into Springsteen's creative process during a defining moment in his career. 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' will additionally be released as a 3CD/3 Blu Ray disc set.

The set will be available as 'The Promise,' an edition which consists of only the unheard complete songs on two CDs or four LPs, along with lyrics and the new essay by Springsteen.

The previously unheard song "Save My Love" and an excerpt from the documentary are now streaming at http://www.BruceSpringsteen.net.

For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after 'Born To Run' and before the collection of songs that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' became."

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Brokenhearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978—including home rehearsals and studio sessions—with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record. Advanced word on the documentary is so strong that it was invited to debut at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and will make its television debut on HBO on October 7.

DVD 1: "THE PROMISE: THE MAKING OF 'DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN'"

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' in its entirety from Asbury Park. WOW! I didn't expect it to be that opulent. I wonder how much you'll have to fork out for it.

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 18:43

same thought here. As long as it's not more than 150€ it's well worth the money I'd say.

The Meat Loaf equivalent of this probably would be a box including

Dead Ringer remastered
Original 81 recordings of Meat doing all the Bad for Good songs, and the Bonnie Tyler/Steinman songs
An upscaled HD version of the Wembley 82 show
HD versions of several other live performances of DR songs
The Dead Ringer movie
and a HD recording of Meat doing all the DR songs in 09 livewithout audience
+an 80 page booklet

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 18:52

considering the contents the price sounds quite reasonalbe!

Obviously a better deal than the HCTB Super Deluxe Edition or whatever the thing is called. I'm especially looking forward to the notebook.

Our equivalent was the poxy Rockpalast DVD with poor quality sound.

LucyK! 26 Aug 2010 19:37

Stunning isn't it RJ!! Andy's gonna see it in about 3 minutes, I'm sure you'll hear the response

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 19:42

think I'll abuse my mod powers for once and let this have it's own thread :))

samurai7 26 Aug 2010 19:44

I'm getting that too!

LucyK! 26 Aug 2010 19:51

That's bloody cheap too for what you get! When we're paying £200 for a M&G, t-shirt and laminate...

A Slice Of English 26 Aug 2010 19:57

*salivates*

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 19:59

how much did we pay for the HCTB box again?

Sarge 26 Aug 2010 20:01

Probably too much, considering what you got for it.

LucyK! 26 Aug 2010 20:02

Don't think about that RJ lol

Springsteen's stuff is always such good value for money, and I don't think I've ever seen such attractive merchandise (if you can call it merchandise), it's always so well presented and thought out

Evil One 26 Aug 2010 20:03

An extra £40 for a t-shirt, a shitty DVD, a key ring, a shiny box and no book.

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 20:04

Absolutely! Springsteen fans have a much easier life than Meat Loaf fans lol

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 20:04

Lucy, can you tape Andy's reaction when he reads this? lol

Evil One 26 Aug 2010 20:06

I'm guessing it will be similar to "Woah, double rainbow!"

LucyK! 26 Aug 2010 20:06

Don't worry, his eyes will still be bulging by the time we next see you!

AndyK 26 Aug 2010 20:09

Me want!

It's only 2 years late, but possibly worth the wait! Certainly a better collection than the Born To Run Box Set which is awesome in itself.

The original recordings of Because The Night, Fire and Talk To Me will be worth it, let alone the rest of the loot! :))

Sarge 26 Aug 2010 20:12

Everybody seems to be crazy about it, I better pre-order as early as possible. :bleh:

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 20:13

might be a good idea....

Maybe Bruce has a better feeling for what the fans want, plus he's been with the same record company for decades, writes his own songs... Maybe that makes it easier to release really cool stuff.

AndyK 26 Aug 2010 20:25

That plus he's got a very astute manager in Jon Landau.

Sarge 26 Aug 2010 20:26

How could I forget that!

AndrewG 26 Aug 2010 22:00

Amazing. Can't believe just how much is in the boxset. I'm especially looking forward to the Houston show. Will have a better look at the list of contents when I'm home.

RadioMaster 26 Aug 2010 22:18

Indeed 2008 would have been more fitting, but none the less this definitely seems worth the wait. Can't believe there is a full 78 show on Blu Ray along with the special Darkness run through show. And then there's the vault stuff and the documentary + more unreleased songs. Wow.
The Houston show must be one of the very few boots from 78 I've never heard, so that's a bonus for me too. What a great Brucey year for concert footage releases and unexpected gems. :))

Observations on the Wario post:
I seriously doubt the 27 minute version of Paradise exists, at least not a 27 minute version studio take. I think that is just a load of made up bollox really. LPs would rarely have sides running over 25 minutes anyway.
Also I'm not sure they would want to release any Meat BFG sessions as his voice sucked and that was the reason he left production, so it probably won't sound as good as Jim's/Rory's version and therefore what would be the point?
After the announcement of London 82 DVD live yet another early 80s live DVD release would seem an absolute waste of time to me. Even though I am a huge fan of Meat AND Springsteen there is not enough diversity in Meat's early shows in my opinion (mainly because of the lack of live songs) to warrant any further releases of that period.

I much rather have a more original approach to a Meat Loaf boxset, one that stems from his late 80s / 90s live material. The reason the Springsteen studio material boxsets approach works so well is because he has literally written hundreds and hundreds of songs (and recorded most of these at some point) unlike Mr Steinman.

I like how you start off wanting a more original approach by Meat Loaf to a boxset, then end up blaming Jim Steinman for not doing more songs :lmao: I believe Meat HAS recorded more non-Steinman songs than Steinman songs ;)

What I meant there really was
a) I don't think Steinman's approach is like Springsteen's. Maybe he has written more songs but Steinman only seems to have gone into the studio when he has songs ready and then ~~~~~~ off asap. I doubt many alternate takes and recordings of unheard Steinman songs exist. Daveake (I believe it was him) pointed out recently he is terrible with deadlines making me wonder if he is really a prolific songwriter.
and
b) the lack of proper recordings of Steinman's more recent material. Demos everywhere but no proper sessions with 1 artist or group whoever that may be, thus completely unusable for release. I think between the Batman demos alone there must be enough material for 1 album at least. And if he does really have bat 3 songs why not to do them instead of focusing on more rehash of the same thing?

Such boxsets only work if you have something to put on them. Indeed Meat has recorded more without Steinman but I doubt anyone would be that bothered about B sides from the 80s or 90s if they are not Steinman penned. Therefore I think a live material boxset would be better.

makes you think why we paid shitloads of money of super duper deluxe box sets, yet got the most decent thing coming out of the whole project for free lol

I take it the Darkness box also contains about 7 songs not even the most hardcore Springsteen fans have ever heard of....

Could be that, or it could be he is releasing them under their proper titles, rather than their "bootleg" titles.

Believe it or not, though, a few people are still crabbing about what he left off...

Yeah, didn't Jimmy Iovine say in that clip that they recorded something like 70 songs for Darkness? Bruce's engineer, Toby Scott, said recently that Bruce has at least 100-200 unreleased recorded songs.

Evil One 27 Aug 2010 20:57

I suspect Meat would only have 10-20 if we're lucky.

I seem to have around 18 "additional" Darkness outtakes, so in addition to what's on Tracks (5) and what's on the original album (10) and the different songs on the new Promise CD (almost 20 - some I already have indeed) the figure of songs indeed starts to head towards 70 but even then there's still enough left for another release potentially.

I believe Bruce had around the same number of songs recorded for The River.

Must say though these boots are sometimes quite bad quality. The version of The Brokenhearted I have sounds like it was re-recorded from the audio in the studio rather than that it is actually from the master tape. So it'd be good to have these in proper quality anyway. I'm guessing most people (including me) never thought to get more Darkness outtakes (in addition to the Tracks ones) in good quality. Really can't see how you can complain about what's potentially been left off.
Having said that! "The Way" is a stunning song in my opinion and I believe that's from the Darkness outtakes, but I could be wrong.
There are two versions known to have been recorded, one a bit faster than the other.

Bruce also stated that he had a "full" rock album worth of songs ready just before the Tom Joad period. I wonder if we have seen the "majority" of those ideas surface so far, doubt it actually.

Really can't see how you can complain about what's potentially been left off.

Having said that! "The Way" is a stunning song in my opinion and I believe that's from the Darkness outtakes, but I could be wrong.
There are two versions known to have been recorded, one a bit faster than the other.

Bruce could throw open the vault door and say "Help yourself", and somebody would still find a reason to complain.

LOL, "The Way" is one of the songs that people are complaining that he left off, but personally, I think it's overrated (blasphemy, I know ). I like the lyrics, but I think the music's kind of plodding, especially the slow version.

I'm most interested to hear that studio version of "The Promise"- I wonder if it will be the same one that's in circulation? My favorite versions of that song, however, are the live versions from '77- '78.

You're right though- regardless of what songs we get, it will be awesome to have good quality versions, since some boots come from very high generation tapes.

It will also be interesting to see what they have remixed/ re-recorded versus what is original from the time period. For instance, what do you think of the "new" song- "Save My Love"? It sounds like a current vocal to me. (I like it, btw :-) )

Indeed that definitely sounds like a newer than 78 vocal to me too!
Who knows, the whole song may have been recorded recently. Maybe one of those instances where what was recorded was simply not good enough/complete enough to release. I don't mind the finishing off at all.
I like it too! Thanks for pointing it out.

I doubt it, as well.

Personally, I would looove to see "Electric Nebraska", but I don't think it will ever happen. I'll settle for an official release of the Magic Tour "Reason to Believe"- that was stunning!

I've never heard this song before and indeed it is stunning. Do you have any 'outtakes' that can be sent via email ;)

Yeah. You are right. I was just thinking along the Meat Loaf path.:-)

ianmar 28 Aug 2010 18:09

There quite a lot of synergy between Springsteen and Meat. Each's album reviews have often included comparisons with the other. I think this is mainly Jim's songwriting but also much to do with Meats passionate delivery.

Funniest (but probably honest) comparison I read was many years ago when a hack from the old UK record paper Sounds wrote:

"While you feel Springsteen would be content to drive round the block with his girl you cant help feel that Meat Loaf would be groping her tits by the first corner."

RadioMaster 28 Aug 2010 19:18

let's not forget that they also shared quite a number of musicians!

Wario 28 Aug 2010 19:28

Have Meat and bruce ever met? Are they rivals? Are they freinds?

Does Bruce feel a little ripped off by Meat and Jim with bat?

Did he like the fact some E Street Band members are on BOOH?

Springsteen should cover All Revved Up. It just would be epic.

They should do a duet version of PFL at a charity event. Just imagine....

RadioMaster 28 Aug 2010 19:34

the only connection I can think of is that Steinman said in several interviews that Springsteen was one of his bigger influences for BOOH, which is pretty obvious anyway lol

According to the Bat credits it was Edgar Winter.

Yes Roy Bittan (piano) and Max Weinberg (drums) were on Bat.

The guy clearly didn't know much about Bruce.

I'm curious about those questions myself. I don't know if they've ever met, but I doubt they're friends. Bruce has never said anything publicly regarding BOOH, AFAIK.

Liked it or not (I doubt he cared), I don't see how he could have prevented it (or would have wanted to). Besides, BOOH was recorded during a time period when Bruce was prevented by a lawsuit from recording anything.

Most of the band members have done other work; I know Roy has done lots of session work on other artists' albums, such as Dire Straits, Bob Seger, Stevie Nicks, to name a few. Ever hear Dire Straits' album "Making Movies"? "Romeo and Juliet" sounds a lot like "Jungleland".

Since we've been posting videos, I thought I'd put this one in so the "unconverted" (and maybe the "converted" as well ;) ) might get a taste of what we're in for with this release. The Houston video should be better quality than this, and in color. Plus, this video is from September- Bruce's guitar solo only evolved and got longer as the tour went on; Houston is from December 1978. (Roy's in here too, so it's sort of ML- related ;) )

That's not too bad, actually; too fast, though. It never would have fit the tone of Darkness done that way, though. Which, I imagine is why Bruce did it the way he did. That song came to it's full glory on the live versions, though, and Roy's outro just keeps getting better and better.

I like this version, but I'm still partial to the slow one (although I've heard a "slow" version with harmonica as well- can't remember which show right now). I got to see it live in '08, and it was just sublime...

Anyway, here's a great one for the Roy Bittan fans (such as myself ;) ): (note Bruce's face toward the end as well)

That is definitely the best version I've ever heard and so lucky I was there....

I remember hearing some great versions from the Born in the USA tour on bootlegs (quite rarely played it in those days) and those were amazing too as Bruce repeated the final chorus again during the instrumental bit towards the end. And then of course there are the Darkness tour ones where the piano played straight into Thunder Road, spine tingling stuff...

You are very lucky you were there! :-) I, of course, think the version I heard live (Harley Anniversary) is the best (and it is a great one- one of the longest outros), but we're splitting hairs here. ;)

But yeah, those Darkness boots- that whole stretch of Prove It-> Racing-> Thunder Road-> Jungleland- just awesome! In fact, I was just listening to Passaic... the Indian story...

I also like the Once Upon a Time in the West intro Roy did before Badlands on the River Tour. I wish he would have revived it for the Dream tour, since he was opening with Badlands anyway; picture this- you hear Roy's piano on a dark stage as the rest of the band comes out, then you hear Bruce shout "ONE, TWO!" and they crash into Badlands as the lights come up.... That would have been amazing! And then Outlaw Pete to follow.

I think he did it once, somewhere, but it was Nils on accordian- not quite the same.

Not un-Brucelike- he just seemed very...moved. To me, he seems very "into" the song. I got the same impression when I saw it live, as well.

AndrewG 30 Aug 2010 02:04

I must have a listen to some of the River shows again, it's been a while! :-) I seemed to have a lot more listening time on my hands when I was a student!

I like Bruce's growly voice on this version and I agree, the piano is superb!

Racing In The Street has always been one of my favorite tracks on Darkness On The Edge Of Town. I remember how I listened to it the first time. It was a friend's house, we had found the LP while browsing his mom's record collection. I wanted to have that album! Unfortunately it was not available, the only Bruce record that was released over here was Born In The U.S.A. It was one of the first albums on my wish list that I bought when I finally got the chance. Now I can even purchase it as a part of a promising looking box. :D

I'm seriously considering to start a "Find a new hobby for WarioLoaf" campaign. Obviously living among Meat Loaf bootlegs, Star Wars movies and SuperMario stuff leads to the obsession to gain world domination by creating and spreading miming videos all over the internet.

None of that even exists. Meat was so bad vocally there was nothing they could salvage. The DEADRINGER movie is missing and or locked away or whatever.
Thats the reason you'll never see anything like that from Meat as there is very little Steinman stuff that isn't already out there from the early days.

AndrewG 30 Aug 2010 03:19

I've listened to Meat Loaf bootlegs, own all the Star Wars movie, have played Mario Galaxy 2 about an hour every few days over the last few months and strangely enough I've not found myself tempted to mime any Meat Loaf or Bruce songs. :sherlock:

Darkness is my second favorite Bruce album; actually, it's kind of 1a behind The Wild and Innocent. I for one cannot wait for this box! :D

I'm curious- how did your friend's mom get the album?
