Hi Bren,
"gezegd" is said, the past tense of "zeggen" to say.

And Flying Mouse/Vliegende muis: the best way to learn is if we put a translation in between or underneath. I promiss not to put up a fight or get nasty, so you have nothing to worry about as far as moderating is concerned.

Groetjes (greetings)

We were giving Bren Dutch lessons on the General board. So I said we should have a Dutch Lessons topic in the off topic session. Mousie was kind enough to create one :)

Het is een kwestie van geduld
rustig wachten op de dag,
dat het hele forum Nederlands lult.
( It's a matter of patience,
waiting patiently for the day
that the whole forum talks dutch.)
"lult" is not a really nice word in Dutch, you have to translate "talk" with "praat" or "spreek". "Lult"is not a polite word (i don't know excactly how to say this in english), but the dutch sentence I quoted is a line of a song, that's why i used the word.
On the dutch forum I quoted so many time lines that I changes my nickname in
"Quot(e)wanneke" now it's short: QT. And that's how I got this nickname. :D

Bren you're the star here....

Anyway, how to translate "lult". It's slang for to speak...like jive talking.

but it more negative then jive. jive is 70's slang, so what's slang for speaking in the new millenium?????

Good question Asha...????? I don't know. I'm the wrong generation. Being brought up with a love of literature and poetry, i tend to use more "old fashioned" English, for want of a better way of putting it.
My daughter, says the most commonly used word at school for talking /speaking to people is "gassing"
Try asking Testify, she uses very "modern " language.

There are many words for talking in the English Language;
talk, chin-wag, chit-chat, have a conference, conversation, dialogue, discourse, discussion, gossip, chat , natter or chatter
You can address one another, commune, communicate, confer, converse, hold forth
idle talk, is gossip or tittle-tattle
someone who never stops talking can be said to;
babble, gabble, prattle, rabbit on, rattle on, witter ....to name but a few

Sorry i can't be of more help

I disagree...

this kind of thing, or anything else i might find useful. dank je wel.

I like the idea Tim,
but i only know a little tiny bit of Dutch ,op het moment.I am trying very very hard to learn and get good.(That's why you have this topic on the forum- it's all my fault  i kept asking what the Dutch was for things, so Guppie kindly asked if we could have this topic.
If i remember correctly she said"what if we would make a Dutch lessons topic in the off topic section and try to brainwash Bren the Bat to the point that Bren would start dreaming in Dutch" (i just loved that Guppie  )
The fact that Guppie, Asha, Mariella, QT ,Michel and Dutch members of this forum, and now you Tim,are willing to take the time to do this ,without getting annoyed at the constant questions  ,is greatly appreciated by me.
This topic is fun but at the same time i am 100% serious in my desire to learn Dutch.

I have a couple of Dutch questions.

In a recent series of Friends, Ross is learning Dutch and calls Rachel and Joey (not sure how to spell it) Azals..Azels?? I think it means something like idiots....?

Also, my friend would like to ask his Dutch girlfriend an important question so could someone tell me what the English translation of "Will you marry me?" is. Also, "yes, I will" and "no I won't" (better have both just so he knows where he stands!)

thank u

Ross calles them "Ezels". "een ezel" is a donkey. So he does mean idiots

OMG... a marriage proposal 8)
"Will you marry me" = "Wil je met me trouwen?"
"Yes, I will"= "ja, ik wil" or "ja dat wil ik"
"No I wont" = "nee" or "nee, ik wil niet"

Speaking and the grammer of the Dutch language is so hard. Even i have some trouble with it.... English a such an easy language if you know the words and the grammer... but Dutch is a hard language... Tough to learn.

Hello Bren.

Je doet het prima zeg... dat Nederlands leren gaat je goed af. Heel leuk om te zien.

Alsjeblieft means: here you are.... or here you have it in a polite way... like a waitress brings you some coffee and say: Here you are, your coffee... in Dutch it will be like: Alsjeblieft, hier is uw koffie.

Alsjeblieft is not the correct way.... if you are polite it is Alstublieft... you see the difference???

Alsjeblieft
Alstublieft.... this is more polite.

The Butcher.

Bren 16 Jul 2003 12:12

Hallo Tim,
Dank je wel.

Thanks for telling me what Alsjeblieft means and for explaining it so well, much appreciated

Oke, een cafe met een rokers en niet rokers gedeelte is een beetje discriminerend vind ik. Het geeft ook een bepaalde sfeer aan in het cafe, zoals ik zei bij een Blues Club of een Bruin Cafe.. het geeft een beetje sfeer. Echt super. Mensen moeten gewoon blijven roken als ze dat willen... als een niet roker er last van heeft moet deze het gewoon zeggen.

I found an online Dutch/English dictionary and had a go at translating this. These are a few words I couln't find translations for, can someone help?

vind
bepaalde
zei
willen
van
heeft

I think I understand the general ideas expressed but the last sentance still confuses me. Perhaps having 'van heeft ' translated will help.

Hope someone can help. Thanks,
E

K, E here goes:
vind is think (I think)
bepaalde is certain
zei is said
Willen is to want
van is off
heeft is has

The last sentence translates as:
I f a non-smoker has a problem with it he just has to say it.

Hope this helps E.
Have fun
Asha
