I've heard the new album!!

I work parttime in a recordstore in Holland and I was pleasantly surprised that this week I was sent a promotional copy of Meats new album!! :D I've listened to it twice and I must say that I did not really liked it. I know a lot of people will shoot me for this, but hey, I'm just being honest. The title track is in my opinion the best song of the album, and I don't even like that song very much. It's also the longest song. Most songs last for about 4 minutes and I think that the songs have a kind of "Blind before I Stop" vibe, if you know what I mean: short rock songs, with sometimes a computer-effect on the drums or some delay on the vocals.
Another thing that surprised me were the lyrics. I'm sorry to say that the lyrics are so cliche, that sometimes I really couldn't listen to them. I mean: where are the days that Meats lyrics had humour, passion and strength? I know that we cannot always compare his new songs to the things he did in the seventies, but this really freaks me out. I will not put any music of the new album on the net, because I know that this will be removed for understandable reasons. I will listen to the new album again and come back later with a full review of every song.

Garrett 14 Mar 2003 11:17

 Excuse me, but you suck!! I know that the album isn't like you say that the album is!! The album will be great, I'm very sure!! I've already heard DIST, CHSIB, Decadent Wish and even a live version of Tear Me Down, and they all together are FANTASTIC!!! I don't believe the shit you say!!

arjanus 14 Mar 2003 11:31

Come on, Garreth. Settle down, man. I thought that a forum is a discussion board, so we can discuse things like civilised human beings, can't we? Why is it that everytime someone puts a 'not so positive review' on meat on the forum, some people react like madmen? I've been a meat fan sinds 1977 (honestly), so I think I can say that I am a true meat fan. But that doesn't mean that I will automaticaly like everything meat brings out. I just gave some arguments why I didn't like his new album, that's all. If you don't agree, that's fine with me, but please don't act like a little child, and come up with some arguments....

Garrett 14 Mar 2003 11:39

Sorry man, but I had a nervous breakdown after I read your post. Sometimes I'm a madman, yes I know. But I think, the album will be great. And the four songs I've already heard are good! Very good!

arjanus 14 Mar 2003 11:42

That's ok, man. We all get a little tensed now and then. :)

Bart 14 Mar 2003 11:55

To Arjanus

He Arjan!

Thanx for the review. I knew it is not your taste. But your writing is good for the discussions here and you have not changed since the day we met eachother back in 1989!!!!

Good rock 'n roll mates i will never forget!!!

Anonymous 14 Mar 2003 11:58

Hi Bart!!!

Did you receive my e-mail from a few days back??? Post a reply on my hotmail, ok???

arjanus 14 Mar 2003 12:08

that was me, forgot to sign in

Bart 14 Mar 2003 12:42

Yeah i got it. But at home my computer broke down! I have sent it to your work. I forgot your hotmail!! i am at work now, gonna mail you tomorrow!

mariella 14 Mar 2003 12:47

Hi Arjan, Hi Bart, this is fun talking to both of you at the same time.
Well, now I realy can't wait to hear the whole cd.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a place where every opinion is welcome!
Mariella

Tim 14 Mar 2003 13:48

Normaly every opinion is welcome, but not on this forum, you see Arjanus, people here can't stand it when you say something negative about Meat Loaf. Well, Screw them!!!
Better have an opinion then be an asslicker.

Michel 14 Mar 2003 15:34

Sometimes it is Tim. But you just have the wrong reactions.

CHSIB is an amazing song, but I hope the whole album is great, but I will see, and give my review when I have it on 31 march. Then I will give positive or negative reaction to this album.

Anonymous 14 Mar 2003 16:34

Just a quick note to wet your appetites -

CHSIB single - awesome - better than id lie for you

DIST - another excellent song although i feel weaker than most of the rest - still rocks though!

Why isnt that anough - lovely ballad - strong chorus

love you out loud - nice effects on the intro - mix between soft and rock

man of steel - awesome - great chrous - gets better when pearl arrives

testify - you wont stop dancing - anough said

tear me down - very rock in roll - great spoken part

youre right i was wrong - similar to why isnt that anough

because of you - again like why isnt that anough and youre right.. although more rock n roll - great guitars

do it - listen to about 5 times before making an opinion - rocks after that - not meat-loaf style but itll grow on you

forever young - all i can say is it does dylan proud - better than rod stewarts - perfect track to end album - one of my favourites

Summary absolutely awesome although i admit it took me about 5 full listens of each song before i realised just how good it is - it grows on you - i think the problem at first is it isn't very meat loaf like - also versions i have of all 11 are clips/ a little of beginning and end of all songs. truely is a great album and i can't wait till march 31st as these clips have give me an appitiser and i really cant wait to hear the full final songs - you wont be disappointed

Shane 15 Mar 2003 03:31

Different kind of album

This album is meant to be different.

I have read a lot of comments in interviews and articles over the past (four?) years about Fun House/Testify/CHSIB, and many of them mention the new album as one that is different (Peter Mokran being one of those that contributes to the differences), and one that is supposed to reinforce the fact that Meat is still young at heart. When I first found out that Peter Mokran was producing, I looked him up on the net, and I became very afraid. But I have had a change of heart since then.

I have read a few comments now that say something about a song not being the `normal' Meat Loaf type of thing, but I expected those kind of comments and I'm not surprised. I'm glad, actually, because it is good to know that it will be refreshingly different in some way.

mariella 15 Mar 2003 13:32

Arjan, thank you so much. Hearing these songs has made me very happy!
I am so glad I met you.
I am far to excited to say something about each song. I can only say it is indeed very different, but it is definately Meat. His voice is great! I have only heard this once. So this is very fresh.
For me Testify really seems like the song I like best. I like the 2 different styles in this song, I think this could turn out to be one of the songs I would call brilliant. And this is only the promo-version, it could all be even better on the album!
The version of CHSIB, is beyond belief, if you like it now..
I really wish more people could listen to this. But like I said when Mystery man came, there will always be someone who can hear it first. I didn't know then I would be one of these lucky people.
I don't know what it is I did to deserve this, but I am most grateful.

What can I say, yet another great day..

Mariella

Anonymous 15 Mar 2003 13:38

mariella, do u agree with my summary i posted above about each song? would u give it that good of a review, have u heard every track

mariella 15 Mar 2003 13:51

I have heard all the songs on the promo. But I feel it's too soon to give any comments. I've heard most of it in the same order as you have. I also heard Mercury Blues. I can only say I agree about CHSIB, but I really love DIST. Thank you for your comments, I really need to hear it more often to say more. Think I also agree with you on Man of Steel.
Great day to you,
Mariella

Anonymous 15 Mar 2003 14:04

Mariella,

Man of Steel is excellent, i am unclear what all you have heard exactly but i believe this album is nothing short of excellent - before anyone posts i ask you to give the album a chance e.g 5 plays in your cd player - each song develops every time you listen to it. Put testify on continuius loop, turn tear me down up as loud as you can - just stop and listen to forever young - dylan is a great writer - but his singing is weak - listen to meat sing it - this is a perfect combination - you talk of meat and steinman - well meat and dylan isnt far off! Be amazed by Do it! maybe give this one more plays at first than the rest. Also because of you is one of my favourite tracks

mariella 15 Mar 2003 14:10

I have heard all the songs of the promo-cd. I will listen to them, like you say, and we'll talk later. Okay
I love this!
Mariella

Michel 15 Mar 2003 14:31

Some people have all the luck

Markus 15 Mar 2003 15:59

Testify! What a great song. I hope they will do a good video and send this song out as a single sometime this summer with good promotion work. THAT`S A SUMMER HIT which will find itīs way to the charts.

But I really liked all the songs! The whole album is much more my taste that WTTN. Something wasnīt right with it in my opinion. The new one is a killer. :-)

Thereīs so much potential within this piece of work and I really hope they wonīt release only the lullabys as singles this time!

Markus.

Cloggy 17 Mar 2003 01:33

I didn't listen to the full album yet, but I did listen to the short clips you can d/l from Kazaa. So my first opinion on those clips are that the songs sound "ok"

Best songs are CHSIB, DIST and Man of steel I reckon.

The song "Do it" is the worst song on the album imo.

Of course these are just short clips, so can't really base an opinion on them. But it's just a first impression. It's also true that you need to listen to Meat Loaf albums a few times before you really start to like them.

White of High 17 Mar 2003 17:56

He-he!

Meat said "Do It" is his fav song from the album!

Cloggy 17 Mar 2003 18:36

Well I get the feeling that the clips you can d/l from kazaa are looped. So you hear the same bit pasted 3 or 4 times behind each other. If that's so, then my opinion will most likely change :P

mariella 17 Mar 2003 18:56

Hi Cloggy, when I first heard Do it, I thought the same as you. This is a song I really have to listen to a few times. And it will never be my no. 1 song of the album. But I must say, the more I hear it the more I 'get' it.
By the way, have you heard Testify and Forever Young?
Great day to you,
Mariella

White of High 17 Mar 2003 19:07

I've heard the new songs!
What would I say?
It's a big surprise!

Meat!
Sorry, but what is it? First time it seems a deteriorated music. I hoped "Did I Say That" and "CHSIB" won't be the best but I have to say these are the best! Jim has ever heard them?

When my friends ask me why do I like Meat's music I say for his own music, for his piano and orchestra, for his voice and a lot of instruments and for background vocals...
And now I hear some songs with guitars and drums, sometimes piano and no more!

About songs:
Tear Me Down: one of the best, better than the version of Hedwig & The Angry Inch but I'd sing "Wig In A Box". It's good rock song what look likes "Amnesty Is Granted" but it's better!
Do It: Garret! Do you remember what I say about Metallica! You will like it. It looks like "Mister Big Time" by Bon Jovi if anybody knows that. It's metal of our time...
Man Of Steel: Not bad but not Meat Loaf. The piano solo is good! It isn't excellent...
Love You Out Loud: I wait a good ballad after the title. I wait a new "For Crying Out Loud". I must say it's bad and boring....
Testify: A new "Midnight At The Lost And Found". I ain't want to say that it is one of the best good fast rock song in the album. It will be good in concert...
You're Right, I Was Wrong: A ballad, no more! It seems to me Diane Warren song but Not A Dry Eye is much better. Simple ballad!
Because Of You: I think this is one of the best song, ballad. The guitar is nice but it isn't Meat too...
Why Isn't That Enough: It is the most energetic song on the album between ballad and rock! I see fantasy in this song!
Forever Young: The best song!!! Beautiful ballad!!! Good piano and violins!!!
Couldn't Have Said It Better: Like "I'd Lie For You" but that is better. You know what is my opinion about "I'd Lie For You"...
Did I Say That: Everybody know!

Well, it is my opinion. Sorry! It isn't my taste! It's only Rock!
Do you know "These Days" by Bon Jovi? After 5 years they have assigned "Crush" and "Bounce" and the fans were taken aback and frightened. Take care Meat Loaf, please!!!

Bart 17 Mar 2003 22:58

Who is the guest? he knows a lot......

Bart 17 Mar 2003 23:03

Forget what i wrote. Wrong message.

Well, is it a bad album?????? Nobody is excited!!!! What is going on here!!!!! Suddenly i do not want to listen to it. I am afraid it will be a total failure....

White of High 18 Mar 2003 19:54

Bart!
You have to listen it!
But I'm affraid it will be total failure... between the fans. It's sure!
Listen it!

Bart 18 Mar 2003 21:34

White of High, i know you are a nice guy but i just cannot believe it. Meat said that it is his best album after Booh (thanx Vicky) and it is the first album he did with no pressure whatsoever from recordcompanies, Kasim says it is great. Michael "what's his name, i always forget it"says it is great, so i expect a lot of it. Yes, i am afraid but it is impossible what you are saying. I have heard to songs now, DIST and CHSIB. They are very very great. DIST is his best single in years! Maybe you just have to listen a few times. Many songs i do not like the first time i hear it.

Anonymous 18 Mar 2003 21:44

what exactly did u hear of the new album White of High - did u hear the promo album or did u hear clips of kazaa? Im just interested exactly what you heard?

White of High 19 Mar 2003 20:23

...from Kazaa...

Anonymous 19 Mar 2003 21:06

DIST is also Meat's ONLY single in years.

This isn't really a factor - we will all buy the album. 80% of Meat's fans will buy the album whether "Do It" is a good song or not. Does it matter?

Bart 19 Mar 2003 22:00

yes it matters a lot! about the single: you knwo what i mean: it is just a very great song

Anonymous 19 Mar 2003 22:03

IVE HEARD THE NEW ALBUM

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WENT ON TO SELL OVER 4 MILLION COPIES,,I EXPECT CHSIB TO MATCH OR EVEN BETTER THAT,,IM SURE ITS A GREAT ALBUM,,ALL THE FANS WILL BUY IT,,IT WAS ALWAYS GONNA BE A BIT DIFFERENT SOUNDING,,I THINK WANTS EVERYBODY LISTENS TO IT , IT WILL GROW ON PEOPLE,,I LIKE THE NEW SOUND,IT IS VERY FRESH

ChrisBelfast 19 Mar 2003 23:39

WHITE OF HIGH.... You've made me feel sick!! kazaa? Please tell me you havent based your negative opinion on the KAZAA CONTINIUOS LOOPS....was it you that earlier posted the songs sound repetive lol - whoever said that had been on Kazaa too.
I have heard final demos........ out of intereset after reading about the kazaa clips i downloaded a couple. I have the full Man of Steel - then i went and downloaded of Kazaa their Man of Steel - its the same duration - 4.43 - only it repeats one verse and the chorus over and over and over for the 4.43 - PLEASE TELL ME THAT SOMEONE HASNT THOUGHT THESE WERE THE FINAL VERSIONS - DIDNT YOU NOTICE HOW THE SAME WORDS WENT ON AND ON AN ON UNTIL THE END....!!!! The only songs you like just happen to be DIST and CHSIB - coincidencily are both not looping versions. PLEASE FOLKS KEEP WELL AWAY FROM KAZAA - IF U R TEMPTED BY THE NEW ALBUM HONESTLY NOT HEARING ANYTHING UNTIL MARCH 31ST IS BETTER THAN HREARING A KAZAA LOOP - I ALSO NOTICE KAZAAS PACE IS FAR SLOWER ON MAN OF STEEL THAN ON MY FINAL VERSION. WHITE OF HIGH - PLEASE SAY NO MORE UNTIL MARCH 31ST - IF YOU STILL FEEL THE SAME THEN NO PROBS AT LEAST U'LL HAVE HEARD THE SFULL SONGS

You're welcome Bart :-)

Everybody's entitled to their own opinion !!

But based on the songs that I've heard :

DIST - full version from the CD single
CHSIB - clip from the BBC2 Radio
Tear Me Down - live (Summer tour)
Why Isn't That Enough - clip from meatloaf.de site

Meat's never sounded better, shows true emotion (mainly in DIST), and the album is going to be amazing :)) I admit it's hard to judge some of the songs by the small clips ... but they've really peaked my curiousity and I can't wait to hear the entire thing !!

Granted some people might not like it because they think it's not typical Meat Loaf music -even Meat said that it's different - but is change a bad thing? I just think it's fantastic that he's willing to take a chance and try something different :)) That to me is a sign of a truly gifted singer ... And don't be afraid Bart ... I'm sure it'll be a big success for him !!

Exactly ! Which is why I don't like listening to Kazaa :)

Typing in CAPS makes your point more valid ;p

dottie 20 Mar 2003 11:29

album

I must admit after reading all your posts - I'm beginning to wonder - I haven't been lucky enough to hear anything apart from DIST which I love - but truly believe a Meatloaf fan will buy the album anyway without listening to it first- I certainly will :!:

Anonymous 20 Mar 2003 13:28

Stop all the fighting

Hey, folks !

Listen to the music you like ... and don't fight with others in cause of different opinions ! Think, we all shall be happy to get something from our favorite Meat Loaf. What place CISIB will have on your personal charts ... who knows ! But be tolerant ... on my promo are more and less better songs ( in my own opinion ), but it's great for all of us to have a new album !

Listen to the music ... in peace !

Yours

Mystery Man

mariella 20 Mar 2003 22:12

Mystery man,
(I)CHSIB(M)
There are more and less better songs on my promo aswel.
But these are opinions. You say this so 'to the point'.
Do you also feel like you've won the lottery?
I still can't get over it!
I am 35, but suddenly it seems I am 18 all over again!
And I promised myself I am going to hold on to this feeling!
Why don't we talk about this later, but I must warn you, I didn't really want to talk about this first. But now I do. So?

Mariella

Guppie 21 Mar 2003 00:21

About downloading.... wheather a person can't wait for the album to be released or not: a real fan wants to have the original album and buys it anyway.
At least: I do....

Cloggy 21 Mar 2003 00:35

Same here :) I bought all of my Meat Loaf albums.....rest of my 5500 mp3's are downloaded tho ;p

mariella 21 Mar 2003 00:42

Downloaded Decadent Wish and the album-version of DIST.
Know a lot of people who did that..
But the promo-cd was a gift, one I am most grateful for. Thank you!!
Can not promise I will never download another song, sorry.
Can you?

Take care,

Mariella

Don't know the definition of 'a real fan'.

I'm Dutch, so I guess I am forgiven :D

imo nothing wrong with downloading before buying... I do that myself.
The definition of a real fan? Dunno either... I see myself as a real fan. But on the other hand: I don't collect anything. No bootlegs, nothing...
I'm just very into Meat. The music, the voice... it gets under my skin, in a GOOD kinda way.

Yes ... I can promise I won't download any of the songs :-) I know a lot of people who do, and that's fine. But I just don't believe in doing that. I won the DIST promo single on Ebay, and then bought the DIST CD Single when it came out :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the promo-cd! I listened to CHSIB on the BBC2 radio site and the clips on meatloaf.de, so I know the CD will be amazing. I've pre-ordered CHSIB from Amazon.com.uk, so now I'll just wait until I get it before hearing the rest of the songs :-)

btw ... I don't know the meaning of a 'real fan' either -:) But I collect
Meat Loaf videos just like I collect Disney & Alfred Hitchcock DVDS ... mainly because I enjoy watching them :))

Hi Vicki,
I salute you on this one! I love it when someone sticks to their principles, specially in a situation like this! I wouldn't have been able to be this strong.
That's why I am very happy I didn't have to make this choice, it was a 'coincidence', a gift, that's why it feels like winning the lottery.
And believe me I am counting the days, so you can enjoy this incredible album! I want you all to be this happy.

Good to know you won the DIST promo.
That is also a 'coincidence'..

Great day to you,

Mariella

Bart 21 Mar 2003 22:00

He Mariella,

Hi Mariella !

Thank you very much :)) Believe me .. it's hard waiting, but I know it'll be worth it when I hear all of the full songs for the very first time.
I still remember how great it was the first time I heard the full versions of DIST and Decadent Wish on the CD single ... now I can't stop listening to them ! And like I said, I was so happy to hear you enjoyed the Promo .. now I know you'll enjoy the CD too.

I love the DIST radio promo CD ... guess that's what I get for being addicted to Ebay .. lol I used the "Buy It Now" option, and a guy in Germany sent it to me right away. It has 3 different versions of DIST, but the full album version is still the best :-)

Have a great day too
Vicki
