Westlife - Total Eclipse of the Heart
I see here this is being released as a single on 12 March. Has anyone heard it? (I imagine it must be on their latest album)
|
Can't even imagine what this sounds like, they ruined The Rose so I dread to think what they've done to this :yikes:
|
Yes I caught a performance where they did this song, it was boring and had no life it was nowhere near as stunning as Bonnie Tyler's!
|
 Bloody hell, wonder what Jimmy thinks of this  :faint:
|
He mentioned it in his latest blog ...
Quote:
Think this really belongs in LB&GG |
I havent heard it, but Iīd bet 10000 that it sounds...........cheesy:evil:
|
 STEINMAN IS INVOLVED WITH THIS MONSTOSITY????????????? :faint:
WTF? :wtf: Jesus tapdancing Christ, Jim Steinman working with shitelife. Someone tell me i'd had my drink spiked and this is just a real bad trip. Thank God the Tanz intro was spared. I'd NEVER have forgiven him for putting that on a westknobjockeys record. Talk about a sell out  |

 To me this is akin to a master chef seeing the light, and going off to make more money by opening up a McDonalds. But who gives a damn about art, right? In the land of the songwritter, the $ is king. Can we please play ROCK & ROLL MERCENARIES in honour of the moment please? |
Well, looks like just another boy band to me...
Didn't like it...in fact, had to listen to Bonnie's version 10 times over just to get bad taste out of my mouth... |
Quote:
 They are just another boy band, but every one seems to be worse than the last. Working with those guys..... Throw me a bone here? Just shows how fast you can become a record companys bitch. |
Don't forget Steinman worked with Boyzone on No Matter What and mixed Take That's Never Forget, so it's not exactly a first.

Just goes to show you eh? |
Holy flamebait Batman!
|
I'm pretty sure ALW promised the song to Meat and Steinman promised it to Boyzone, although I could have that arse-about-face.

Oh bloody hell, that's gonna be released a week before my birthday?! That sucks! Imagine that being number 1 on your birthday:roll: . Must stay away from car from the 12th March as it's the only place the radio is usually on, or if I must use car will take CD with me.
Btw haven't actually listened to the song, don't think I need to really. Cover versions from boybands are rubbish (and that's putting it mildly) anyway. |
Quote:
And yes...pretty much rubbish...decent voices...but wasted in a boy band in my opinion... |
I like westlife - they're my boys! wa ha ha ha.......
|
for christ sake is there no classic they wont kill
everything they do is cheesy and to think steinman even considered for a blip to be involved just stinks of.....well i cant find anything more apt than Neils cry of sell-out. its like their own songs couldnt get them anywhere so they've taken to nicking everyone else's.. very similar to Ronan's i'm gonna nick every successful garth brooks song approach...wait a minute! does he still manage them? |
I canīt understand you!!!!!!
I think itīs fantastic!!!! |
ronan's not involved with them now
|
Haven't heard it, where can I get a listen to it?
|
Actually, to be honest, Westlife isnt THAT bad, there are boybands, which are far worse. Their songs are not as cheesy as other boybands.
And I personally really prefer a TEOTH by Westlife to a version by, letīs say Take That. Itīs always a bad idea to cover a classic. if you think westlife does it bad: Listen to the Eric Prydz(sp?) version of The Wall, called 'proper education' after you heard that, you will LOVE Westlife's TEOTH |

It sounds samey. The guy with the gruff voice has tried to emulate Bonnie Tyler. It would have worked better had they not skirted around the high notes. I was sat waiting patiently to see which one of them was going to sing the falsetto part. Never happened :( |
Just to clarify:-
Jim Steinman is not involved with this. He was asked to provide an alternative remix which was rejected. Hopefully one day we'll get to hear it, but this doesn't look likely. So I repeat: Jimmy IS NOT involved. |

Commercial crap like West (sorry, I have a hard time even typing their name) is complete ANATHEMA to what Rock is all about. It's self serving crap with little or no purpose, and it's sole purpose is to put money in some suit pocket. |
i'm not talking about their singing..they can sing
i just hate bands and singers who resort to covering tried and tested songs instead of coming up with something original...some of their early original stuff is fine but i hate this bandwagon jumping, our songs arent selling anymore,so we'll take our pick from everyone else's attitude. 1st cover fine,2nd cover fine i could even tolerate a 3rd cover but they are really taking the pee now..i've lost count how many singles they have released that are covers |

the only thing I can say is: ouch!
And if you think youīre able to take more: Listen to the dance mix:doh::doh::doh:
Think Iīll lay down and die now.... |
Quote:
|
a dance mix :lmao:
|
Quote:
:lmao: |
nope not against rocking to it!!!
Dancing in that fashion yes yes yes!!!!! :lmao::lmao: that dj should be shot!!! |
youre right Zina
The thing that annoys me with that version (as with every boygroup stuff) is the complete lack of emotion. How can you sing a song like that so flat??? I know some people with really great voices, from my time as choir boy. They hear a song, and hit every note perfectly, but they do it as it would be a craft-job. They dont understand the meaning of the songs or get moved by the melody, etc. Iīd prefer 1000000times a singer with a crap voice, hitting every 10th note, but mediation the emotion! That really makes me angry! |
The lady has a good voice
(my mama said "if you can't say anything nice, don't say nuthin' at all") |
to get over that shock, I had to listen to Ms Tylers original, the Tanz der Vampire and the Dance of the Vampires version, think Iīll survive now.
(Refused to listen to Neil's version :lmao:) |
Quote:
WESTLIFE!!! EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!! |
 What manner of utter bollocks is THAT???????? Anyone??????? Throw me a bone here???????????? They look like 5 scrufft twits who have gone down the karaoke at the local on a Friday night. Their voices are crap. Too much fecking what to them I supose is "emotion" but to me sounds like a Britney Spears tribute act gargling. Westcrap are RUBBISH. They've always been rubbish. Why can't they stay over there and be rubbish? Why do they have to come and pick up our songs and be rubbish with them.
Well Nikki IS starting to look a bit "tired" now. She looks a bit like the enthusiastic auntie who gets up on the mic at every family occasion to do her party piece. The thing (I won't call it beat or anything musical) behind the initial tune of the song just doesn't match at all. It's out of time, out of tune, and out of style with the whole song. |
Quote:
Can't find anything else to say...could have said that they might be eye candy sometimes...but they just don't swing THAT way for the most part...;) |
:silence: :silence:
yes she does have good voice,a little like bonnie's methinks ;) and the dj has done a really good job  it's a well practiced trick amongst dj's to take an old song, speed it up,put a generic beat behind it which can be found on any 'floorfillers' album. now a real dj would put their mark on it not someone elses beat ;) but what do i know :lawl: |
 Do not even fecking mention my version of Totale Finsternis in the same thread as these fecking assholes
Not that my version of Totale Finsternis was very good, or acurate (hey, it's what you get when you have 2 weeks to learn a duet in a foreign language over skype, then on the big day spending nearly 6 hours on a coach to get to London where you sing yourself horse trying to get it right), but it WAS sung in context, and by someone who actually digs the material. these assholes have had a song picked for them with the standing order "go into that booth, record that, make me shit loads of money". Hell, it might not be the best version of the song ever done, but at least it was an honest one. Not what these feckers do  |
You were carring a mood/feeling with that song, and thatīs most important for me, thatīs the reason for me to buy albums too.

Maybe Meat could save us by releasing another single from Bat. I don't know...say...Bad For Good... [Catherine makes a face indicating she's been thinking BFG all along]...around the same time, maybe a couple of days after, and go
Now THIS is what a Steinman song is supposed to sound like!!!!!!  |

To me rock is more than music and lyrics. It's more than a sum of it's parts. It's something deep, special, and sincere. This stuff is just MsDonalds music, created by the suit, performed by the dumb, packaged by the indifferent, and bought by the sheep. It has no artistic merit, very little value, and no real substance whatsoever. In a world where emotion is portrayed by gargling, we know we ain't in Kansas anymore  |

As I say, not brilliant, but under the circumstances, not bad for a first ever shot at singing it. |
Goodness, how heated has this become!!
I imagine it probably will go to number 1 purely because it's Westlife, they could sing nursery rhymes and they'd go to number 1, which is a great shame. But hey, they're a band who are at the minute doing a range of cover versions, they've been given a song, it's going to get them a hellof a lot of publicity and even more cash - can't blame the boys really |
Quote:
Quote:
I like it and have downloaded it for keeps. |
youīre right Lucy, thatīs the real shame.
that thing will reach #1, and as song as BAAB will be lucky to be found in the top 5  |
Quote:
That dancing... don't get me started ! |

In fact, I'm appalled by the utter ridiculousness of some of the comments. If you don't like a cover of song, fine. You don't have to listen to it anymore, and just move on! Repeatedly calling the performers of said cover various names (f*cking assholes, for example) is just plain silly and wrong. Especially by a moderator. Could we get another mod in here to give some people a chill pill? |
It's already been done ... consider the thread brought back on topic. :))
|
Goodness what a great thread I've started here :))
I didn't think the Westlife version was too horrific (although I did cringe at the end part). There's obviously a market for this type of stuff - people will like it and people will buy it. I'm just away to e-mail Gary Barlow and suggest Take That do You Took The Words  |

Still, at least he chose not to be involved with Bat III - that would have really tarnished his legacy. Did I say that? |
hmm so we cant have an opinion on any songs but meat's? interesting
i think the fact Steinman was/wasnt/could've been involved in this has clouded some peoples objective judgment skills and it is more than just this song..they have done it quite alot which implies money making gimmick, can we not have an opinion on that either? |
Don't think anyones said you can't have an opinion ... it's more a question of how that opinion is voiced that was the issue!
|
maybe i misread a certain post then..if so i apologise ;) disregard the first part of my post
but i stand by the rest :)) |
Quote:
Although Westlife's version isn't the best by far, it certainly isn't the worse. I can't get my head around this song being sung just by the lads and no lasses, one could argue that it is though :lmao: Pud  |
Quote:
Pud  |
not as criminal as re-doing "i have a dream" but still not good. never mind some boy band would have to remake it at some point.
Bonnie performed total eclipse on This Morning yesturday live. maybe this is to remind the public audience she did it origionaly. |
Yep, I Have A Dream was painful.
Pud  |

Bonnie re-re-re-release of TEOTH is a collaboration with Baby Pink Star.
|
Well I've seen Westlife 5 times in concert and do you know what? they are actually quite entertaining and fun. Each to their own eh? And I wouldn't mind 10 minutes alone with that Shane! Corrrrrrrrrrr
|
Quote:
*gets out the BIG knife" |
Quote:
I quite agree Christa! The concert we saw was very well done - they had a 'glass' stage that come down over the front half of the audience so that those at the back got a better view for part of the concert. |
i'm sorry but they're full of gimmicks and other peoples music
|
Iīve just heard the song performed by them for the first time...
And I have to admit that I donīt like it. That has nothing to do with the band itself, because I like some songs of them. Itīs just, you canīt cover THAT song... It just wonīt work in my opinion. I love the song performed by Bonnie Tyler, itīs so unbelievably great!!! I wouldnīt say theyīve destroyed the song, but it just doesnīt touch me at all!!! |
Guess I really should make the effort to listen to this
|
Don't feel you have to ;-)
|
I feel I'm missing out on something
|
Quote:
|
actually missing out on this particular case is a good thing M
Save yourself!!!! It's too late for us!!! :lmao: |
Don't worry Monstro, I'm sure when it's released we'll have plenty of opportunities to listen to it whether we want to or not!
|
Yet another crime committed against music by the boys from Ireland. When will they stop and i'm sorry Jim even doing a demo for them proves my faith that art comes before money has totally evaporated.
|
Hmmm have just seen Bonnie Tyler perform Total Eclipse on the pitch at half time at Upton Park (West Ham v Liverpool) :))
|
Quote:
|
sock it to em Bonnie :))
|
Quote:
Westlife don't need that much publicity, as there's hardcore Lifey's (or whatever they're called) who'll buy it no matter what and it'll still reach high in the charts. Pud  |
Westlife do a huge girl teenager following here in Ireland, And i assume the UK aswell?
|
The only credit i will give to westlife is that they're still around...but at the same time every ballad they do sounds the same.
I haven't heard this version and i don't want to because i can imagine it and it's neither a good image or good sound in my head. The other voices in my head need their time to roam! |
I heard this song last week as my friend loves Westlife... All i can say is that it sounds rather gay...They are guys singing turn around bright eyes.
They are good singers yes.. But i feel in my opinion this was a wrong move for them, they should have left this one for Bonnie. It's a classic and I love it. I also felt that it had no 'spark' when I heard Westlife's version. |
Ok, just heard it and had to put the original on after to get the taste outta my mouth!!!!

the last time a song was murdered like that was the techno version of Alice Cooper's Poison

just my opinion but its cheap dj crap.
Any bedroom dj could do that let alone a pro |
what? Total Eclipse of Poison?
|
 :?
|
Think he is referring to poison
|
either that or rj has come up with a funky mix of the two
|
:panic: *runs away screaming*
