Early Meat Loaf Memories
 

After attending the Meat Loaf concert in Orlando, FL on August 30, 2010, some early memories of Meat started coming back to me. I first saw him perform on Saturday Night Live in 1978. The guest host that night was an actor named Christopher Lee. Lee was known for his roles in many horror films. When it was time for Lee to introduce Meat as the musical guest, he became a little confused reading the cue card. As I recall, Lee ( who probably never heard of Meat) said something like "Ladies and Gentlemen......meet Loaf". Meat then went on to perform...All Revved Up & Nowhere To Go and Two Out Of Three Aint Bad. And......I was hooked!!!

If anyone on here has never seen him perform live.....DO IT. It was one of the most remarkable experiences I have ever had.

How Meat Loaf in NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a mystery to me. In fact, until he is......I don't consider it complete!

what's sad is that a few months later he sounded a million miles from this in the nassau coliseum.

this is good, nothing wrong with the sound as far as I can hear

Meat's vocals weren't the best during the Nassau Coliseum show, but I think a lot of that is due to whoever was playing with the volume button at the mixer desk. They kept turning him up and down at random intervals.

if you listen to the you took the words and unfortunately it sums up meat vocally for that show. he's trying very hard and musically it sounds great but this was around the time that Bat was really taking off and the pressure was really on him then as has been documented.

But then if you listen to Heaven Can Wait and All Revved Up his vocals get better. Then from Paradise onwards the show really goes to shit, which is a shame as musically I think it's one of the best shows from the Bat 1 tour and Jim was outstanding.

this is true. If you listen to the instrumentation in all revved up its the best!

If it had the My Fathers Place Vocal damn...

He was starting to show a bit of strain vocally then because he was performing every night..so maybe they were playing with the vocal mixer to have him sounding right. But the sound quality of the concert isn't great so I wouldn't be to critical to be honest.

If you listen to Bolero and Bat on the Dolby 5.1 SACD you'll notice that different instruments and vocals are mixed to different tracks. Therefore I deduce that the Nassau show was 'professionally' recorded and could be fully restored and released by Sony should they choose. Compare their BOOH to the bootleg version.

Sony were supposed to be releasing a live concert from the Bat tour in 2006, presumably to coincide with the Bat III release. As I understand it it got blocked partially because of the court case with Steve Popovich and Cleveland, and partially because they were offering a pittance for royalties to the band who featured on the recording.

It's a shame. As I said above I think everything except Meat's vocals on that show are top notch. They did a decent job with Meat's voice on BOOH, so I guess they could do it on the rest of the songs. That said, I'd much prefer the El Mocambo concert to be remastered instead.

My first memory of Meat is the first time I saw the Anything For Love video. I thought to myself that he was a God with powers of the Universe. At the time I really wasn't in to music like I am now but as soon as I herd his amazing voice I realized what I've been missing.

Mine was My Unles blasting out Bat album on a tape (ha) in his car in the last 80's. I would have been 4/5. Always remember his old vauxhaull trips to skegness with Meat blasting away - followed by Queen then some dire country and western haha.

The same uncle really got me into Meat loaf, as I remember the AFL video and the promo's in the shops. There was this huge Bat 2 - whats the word - the things you see in cinemas advertising films - cardbord cutout?? Anyway, thhis huge cutout was in a record shop and I wanted it so bad, but could not have it, but My uncle bought me Bat 2 on my first ever CD (wich I still have) and tape for his car - but - the memore that sticks in mind the most, My uncle told me that Meat loaf slept in coffins - as we all know, adults tell small lies to kiddies. It made me love Meat more, and be more in awe of him. Im lucky that I didnt have strick parents, as such, because they allowed me to go to see Meat for the Bat 2 tour in Sheffield when I was 8, with my sister - and we got free tickets for the 2nd show coz my Dad won a competition on radio hallam, so I got to see him twice. I always remember being a little frightend when the intro started for the show, all these flashing lights and these wierd noises...scared me to death. Although, I know I was younger, I am still convinced to this day, the show was a hell of a lot louder then what the arena pumps out now. I think the noise police put restrictions on the db level a few years back.

Anyway, thts my early Meat memory.

don't really have a first memory due to my Dad's love of him his music's always been around and was actually playing in the car when they took me from the hospital after I was born. If I had to guess it'd probally be going down the Motorway with Bat Out of Hell blaring

Mine was the first time he sang on the Old Grey Whistle Test. My husband shouted I had to come and see this now! We were blown away .. as were millions of viewers. There was such a huge phone response to the BBC he was invited back immediately. We went to the first concert we could (Hammersmith) .. and the rest is history. Never missed a tour since.

Yes .. so was Andy I believe, although we didn't meet. Nor was I 18 months or still in the womb ;) I am a contemporary of Meat's (which is an OK thing to be imo) and when I say I have followed him throughout his concert career, I have .. and as an adult :-)

Have no idea what your emoticon signifies .. but surely you aren't surprised that Meat's fans from the first still follow him with as much enthusiasm and commitment as those who have become fans more recently? We can still walk, talk and rock! .. just like Meat .. :lol:

as for my first meat memory (per-say):

my dad came to pick me up from school after 911 happened. We listened to the coverage of the attacks via radio and he took me to the hospital my mom worked. He picked up a "Hits of the 70s" compilation CD in the gift shop. We played it in the car on our way back home. Track 3 was a song called "You Took The Words Right out Of My Mouth". I never heard it before. We spent the rest of the day watching the news. Never forget
