Well, here it is. After i spoke with Bren, we descided that there must be an Art topic for us both.

And here it is!!

Hope we can talk all about art. (mostly in the way of paintings and drawings... but maybe also otherwise)

If there is one in your country, please do. This is a very cool artist, which creat art with moving images and audio and visual performance... It is so very cool to see.

Bren, are you familiar with the artist Hundertwasser?? Have you ever seen some architecture made by him? It is very colorfull.... real strange, and funny.
It is a bit like Gaudi, but different. Barcalona is more the Gaudi city... ever been there? Me not, would love to go there, and watch his architecture there.

Have you heard of an artist called Kurt Jackson? He is a contempary landscape artist, i really like his work.

How do you go about you're painting?
Do you have an idea what subject you want to paint before you set up,or do you stand in front of the canvas waiting for an idea?

Depends on the subject matter Mousie, if I am painting from my imagination, I wait until I can "see" the idea in my head, how the painting will look, only then do I start painting it. Many of the paintings that I paint from the imagination are inspired by music/song lyrics. Sometimes when you are listening you "see" something in the song, maybe a particular lyric will spark off an image/idea in your mind and I paint what I see. The music and lyrics have to have that "something extra" before you can do this, like Meat Loaf songs. Also the Moody Blues, I have been a life long fan of theirs and have always found their music inspirational, and lately the Dave Matthews Band, the lyrics to some of their songs are very beautiful and poetic. I always listen to music whilst I am painting, it is essential and it has to be the right music. (usually Meat Loaf and more Meat Loaf :mrgreen: )

If I am painting a landscape then you paint what is in front of you, same with if iam doing a detailed study of a flower, i would have it there i front of me and paint it.

As for just "standing in front of a canvas waiting for an idea" ... i think i would have a very long wait :lol:

Hello Bren,

I took a look at that page from Kurt Jackson. Looked very familiar. But it is beautifull. Lot's of water...Very nice to see how someone uses a theme for all of his paintings, and how different that can be. Alse the texture is very nice. Nice colors!!

But about Moussies question. When i paint, i sometimes have the picture in my head already. Sometimes i work this out, due to pencil drawings, or i will start right away.

Some other times i just start painting, and then i will see how it will be, or turn out. That is pretty cool.

As for my influences... i really love Luis Royo and Michael Whelan. And offcourse some other great painters.

well Bren, it ain't that hard. It is worth to try to paint in that way. Maybe it will be an abstract paining, maybe it will be very realistic.
One thing i know, it will be very nice to watch. Cause it will be your feelings that are on the canvas, and that can be a great relieve.

Tim,
it would be quite a hard thing to achieve working in watercolour, the very nature of the medium you are working in( watercolour) would restrict what you could do/achieve

but maybe , Bren she will have a go and see what happens.....

..I decided to be brave and have a go at this, it was a bit scarey....watercolour is a very unforgiving medium to work in,you have to think quickly, paint quickly and get it right first go
I got a large sheet of paper and just painted whatever came into my head.
To overcome some of the problems of trying this in watercolour ,i started in the middle of the page and worked outwards...i didn't know what the painting would be like, but i like what i've done, so i'll finish it
tomorrow :D
after the initial "terror" at the thought of painting this way , i really enjoyed it....so thanks :D I sat down to paint, when i next looked at the clock...it was 5hours later,i don't know where the time went.
when its finished, i'll photograph it for you...if you would be interested in seeing it

Bren... see you have followed my advice. And how did it work out? it is very hard to paint in that way... cause it has to do with your feelings and emotions. So thinkl that is pretty cool what you tried.

Do you have some interesting painters / architectures that you really love or like? Just curious, cause i know you are an art person also. And Architecture is art, the way i see it.

Yes Tim, i agree architecture is art...but i am not knowledgeable on architects/architecture.....you obviously are.
That does not mean i am not interested in what you have to say about it.....If i do not know a certain artist,then i like to find out about their work, it is very interesting to find out about new things, to learn about artists whose work you do not know about...i enjoy doing that :D

Ijust painted whatever came into my head...i will try to describe it for you but wether my words can paint it clearly enough for you to"see", or imagine ..i don't know
In the centre of the painting is an angel,on a staircase of blue and gold. All around her is light.You see her through a doorway of a building.The door frame fades and flows in to water,which changes and becomes grass and a tree of tears,which grows up the side of the building and over the doorway.The tears fall in to darkness and become broken fragments of coloured glass that cascade down the page.The colours drain and flow from the shards of glass, like a rainbow , flowing back into the water.
(The water flows from the centre towards you, then the rest follows round in a clockwise direction.)

Sounds interesting Bren.

I personally am, with the exception of 2 artists, not a paticular fan of a paticular artist or style. As the quote goes "I know what i like!!"

Some "modern" abstract art does nothing for me such as Damien Hirst's Coloured Circles but I can also say the same about some of the old masters.

The only two artists that i love and would visit exhibitions to see are Salvador Dali - I think his pictures are amazing and can look at them numerous times without seeing it in the same way twice

and

L.S. Lowry - his pictures are incredible adn so full of real human life. i ahve a print of "Going To the Match" on my stairs wall and everytime i look at it, I see soemthing new that i hadn't noticed before.

In terms of architecture, i ahve heard of frank lloyd Wright but cannot remember what he designed. Some buildings i thinka re amazing such as Spence's Cathedral in Coventry but to be honest, I find a lot of "new" building s to be quite boring. i much prefer the work of people such as Wren and the old, intricate buildings like St Pauls Cathedral in London.

I also like the ancient art like the roman villas and mosaics.

To open a whole new area up: What do people think fo sculptures? I like Henry Moore but am really unimpressed by modern art "installations" such as Emin's Bed, Hirst's Cow in Formaldehyde and the like.

Nice to hear your opinions
I too am a Salvador Dali fan, he is one of the artists i admire.
Lowry, has a very unique style and as you say there is somuch in his work but he is not a favourite of mine.
There is a concert hall a few miles from where i live, has Henry Moore sculptures in the grounds, they look very dramatic in that particular setting
Tracey Emin i am not a fan of( she was at college with my sister)i don't ,personally consider things like exhibiting her bed, as art.
Likewise, Damien Hirsts work, especially the cows ,does nothing for me, it's more a question of doing something different to shock...i think...but art?.
You mentioned the Cathedral in Coventry as being an interesting building.....the "new" cathedral in Liverpool i always thought was an amazing building, i lovedthe light through the stained glass....the whole design of thebuilding is just really different ...i used to visit it often
