United Devices Cancer Research Project

I was wondering if anybody on these boards ran the above program on their computers. I have just set up a team on their system called The Loafers and thought it could be nice to have a team of us working towards a good cause. I started running the program in June 2002 and my computer has done 202 days worth of work well letting me continue using it as if it wasn't there. If you are interested in joining the team please do. Anyone who wants to find out more their website is www.grid.org and the information is under projects - Cancer Research.

We started running the program after my Mother-in-law died from cancer. This is something that costs us nothing in time or money but may in time help a lot of people.

Stickied for a while.

Chris 10 Jan 2004 23:13

I'm on the team!!

Does everyone have to run the same project?

Rob The Badger 11 Jan 2004 01:00

Count me in. . .what do I have to do?

black dog 11 Jan 2004 08:38

Welcome to the team Chris. I don't see why we have to run the same project as there are a few there. I choose not to do the smallpox project because it seemed to run to the computer so much more than the cancer one and we run the program because of my mother-in-law who died of cancer.

Rob if you go to the website www.grid.org you will need to download a small program which runs in the background on your computer. Your computer will then tell you when it needs to connect to the internet to send the results of the work it has done.

Once you have set up the program you can then join the team

im in black dog and have already done 3% for the smallpox

can i change it to the cancer one??? instead of the smallpow??

black dog 12 Jan 2004 03:27

If you login with your password and go to my member profile at the bottom of the screen there are the two programs they are running at the moment. If you uncheck the box for the patriot grid running smallpox your computer will just run the cancer project.

If you then click on teams you can join The Loafers and be part of our new team please Click here

Thanks for running this program

I would like to sign up for this, but how do I know it is safe? Is there anyway that they could access other things in my computer? I'm not such a computer wizz as to know what can and can't be done. Can someone please reassure me that it is safe? :!:

black dog 14 Jan 2004 18:52

Thank you for your interest plukie. I understand in this day and age we have to be careful about what we download from the internet. I have found some information about security on their website if you use this link it will take you straight to it http://www.grid.org/help/faq_security.htm

I can not guarantee the safety because I do not have enough knowledge of computers to do this but I have been running this program for 18 months and my computer has now donated 206 days of time. If you go the team you can check my details to see that this is true. My UD name is shelley_845211 you will automatically view my information since I joined the team but if you click on my name it should give you my history. My parents have been running the program for even longer. It was through them that I learnt of this site.

Any queries you can always PM me.

Thank you again for your interest.

Connecting to the server

What ports do I have to open on my firewall to let the UD Agent connect to the server?
Open ports 80 and 443, outbound.
I hope this will help you.

Great work. Congratulations everyone. Welcome on board Cabbie212.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but the units seem to be taking longer to process at the moment. Some of mine have been 10+ hours where they were about 6 hours. Just as well the program saves the information after each Ligand.

[RDH]draconia 31 Jan 2004 19:14

yes i had noticed that also black dog
but i havent had my comp on for a while so i didnt realise it as a problem
hehe i thought that it was just me

black dog 31 Jan 2004 21:07

The only reason it has come to my attention is that our computer is turned on every evening when we come in from work and left running. I started leaving it on over night so that it could do extra work and used to come down to find that it had always finished in the morning ready for me to download when I got up. Lately it hasn't finished when I get up which is why I have noticed.

Having looked at the forum the information says that the smallpox units are taking about 24 hours but because they have 200 ligands to work on. Because of this they obviously save the information more often than the cancer work units which only have 20 ligands.

Mind you it doesn't help when my son plays games on the computer because he uses so much of the computers resources that the program doesn't really go anywhere.

Anyway whatever usage my computer gives is all something that I am giving for nothing really.
