I dont think that the way the song is written is a try to compare with Jim, he just tried to write something in the typical Meat Loaf style, and naturally, that IS Jim Steinman.
Btw, when I heard this the first times, I always heard:
"The truth is hard to swallow when you're choking on your bride"
