VERY interesting discussion, there were many points I'd like to add my two cents, but dont wanna drag this thread back, so just my two essential thoughts:

If you see Zina's thoughts about SUV's, these might be the general thoughts of most Americans (I assume), so you dont have to wonder why the US is the main consumer of oil/producer of greenhouse gasses (if you call it that).

When the socialists with Schröder took the government here, back in 1998, they declared their aims to make Germany more healthy, with increasing tax on cigarrets and fuel. After a few years, it showed an impact, people smoked less and drove less. Only problem: Government complained that the economy had to suffer from less tax income, and told people to drive and smoke more.

That shows that after all it's just about money.
