It wasn't one dodgy performance mate.
For some unknown reason, the producers thought giving Michael Crawford creative control of the musical would be a good thing.
It wasn't
Alarm bells should have started ringing when Crawford decided to change Von Krolock into an Italian (an Italian "Von"? FFS) so he could do a "funnier accent".
Obviously the fact that it's not a comedy just didn't occur to him.
He didn't get the material.
There ARE elements of humour in Tanz Der Vampire, but they are NEVER about Von Krolock.
He is not a figure of fun, and to try and inject some into the character is too completly compromise his menace.
The English language demos by Steve Barton are beautiful.He should have been offered the part there and then when they decided to take the musical to Broadway.
