The virus you are thinking of is called Back Orifice. I use a modded version at work to track the computers in the other shops are up to. Also very useful for running remote tasks for tech support purposes (and scaring the [undefined, soft, usually dark coloured, strong smelling stuff that attracts flies] out of people when you start flashing random messages up on their till screen!!!!)

Chris, I use a program (not a virus) on the kid's computers at the school I work at. When I am watching their computer screen from my desk a tiny pair of eyes appear on their screen. Freaks them out
bad! (Though taking control of their computer remotely and typing messages to them is even more fun! They get so flustered).

I had someone send me (quite literally) over 300 emails with the SoBig attachment in about 48 hours. Thankfully it stopped fairly quickly, but the research that I did on it said that it will die off effective Sept 10. So it nothing else, you can look forward to it ending then.
