Which is precisely what Meat himself stood up like a man and said, on the programme, in interviews, and here. As one of the "friends" you probably consider "constantly and unconditionally flatter" Meat I think that should be enough; it certainly is for me and for most of us.
To err is human, I've done it many times. To stand up like a man, admit it and apologise is admirable, and makes understanding, accepting and forgiving easy rather than divine.
To respond with a public announcement of a (second) departure due to disillusionment seems odd, unless it's to bait a response from the person you say you're walking away from, in which case an objective was presumably met. Saying you feel foolish for having followed him for so long is bound to make him feel he's being found wanting and put down, because it's simply not the kind of thing to say to anyone in front of an audience, though of course here it could be anticipated to provoke a reply which will keep the door open to continue to elaborate on why you feel him wanting.
