I just found out that she was only 19 years old at the time. One of my very favorite movies.
It sounds similar to Dirty Dancing; I read that they went with Jennifer Grey as opposed to a professional dancer, because they thought her inexperience would be more believable (I think they were right). So, Patrick Swayze literally was teaching her to dance during filming.
Another fun fact: the movie depicts Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) supplying the voice for Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) on the song "I Would", but it's actually Hagen's own voice that you hear.
