Default New Laptop - Advice needed

My laptop's dying, not gonna go into details but the prognosis isn't good. It's pushing 6 years old so can't complain.

I've never professed to being anything but slightly above ignorant when it comes to IT and to be honest after looking around the web for a few days at different deals etc I now class myself as confused and slightly above ignorant.

This in my limited knowledge seems a good deal but I was hoping the more IT literate would give their opinion, my thanks in advance!!!!!!

So what do you think?

Have you thought about looking at an ex corporate machine?

Shop I use has a Sony Vaio with almost identical spec but with a 120g HDD for £249. In this case its less than 6 months old with brand new battery and 12 month guarantee. If you have time to look round you can get some real bargains.

Don't go to PC World ... you're paying for the name half the time.

Find yourself a local retailer or shop around on the web, Lenovo aren't bad for the money (basically they're IBM clone machines so look a little clunky but do the job admirably), certainly don't go for anything with less than 2GB of memory.

Agree with Andy, wouldn't go to PC World!

I thought this one looks ok for the price - has 2 GB of Ram and a decent sized hard disk
and it's a big brand name!

Hope this was any use - I'll email a techy friend of mine tomorrow who knows about
these sort of things and find out what he'd buy and let you know what he recommends.

kinda following what Mick Loaf said (since his link pointed to laptops direct), I bought my laptop from laptopsdirect and was quite happy with them - I was able to get a higher spec laptop for a lower price than pcworld or currys, and even though i didn't pay for super speedy postage, i was really happy with the delivery time (can't remember what it was now, but it seems quite good to me). the only downside is that you can't actually hold the laptop in your hand and have a faff with it - but there's plenty of pics if you need to check the keyboard layout etc.. no i'm not working on commission but i'd recommend them :)
good luck in the laptop hunt - i only bought mine last summer and i remember well all the complicatedness - and by the time you've made a decision, better models have come out already!
