Default The Euro?

I'm interested to know what all your thoughts are on this subject.

All you in the UK, what do you think do you want to lose £ sterling?

All our european friends, how is it working have things become more expensive?

Personally I hope the UK doesn't go there.

I'm with you on this one, Sin.

Althought there may be some advantages to joining the euro, i think it'd be the worst thing this country ever did if we joined.

I really dont like the idea of having a euro 'superstate' at all. I'm not a particular nationalist or anything, but i'd prefer Britan to stay as it is.

I'm half Spanish and my family over there are telling me hat the cost of living as increased since its introduction. Their wages are rellatively lower that here but they don't have things like TV licences etc

I also think it's daft to try to unite through a currency because no matter what the politicos say, unless I can get the same pay for similar jobs in all member states, untill all taxes are level through out the community, and a jar of coffee cost the same through out it aint going to work!

In The Netherlands things have become more expensive.

But the english pound is stronger than the euro. The dutch gulden wasn't. Probably in the UK things will become cheaper. But I don't know it for sure.

It is a lot easier to use the eruo, because you can use it in every country.

Personally I do not think that the Euro is a good plan. One of the main problems with it is the need for economic harmonisation. This means that the British economy would ahve to compare to somewhere like the Greek economy. We are already beginning to see the problems inherent int he system in the case of the German economy where I believe that Germany, in trying to maintain it's economy, has fallen foul of the EU commisions rules and is being fined. Thus one of the former great powerhouse economies is starting to derail. Somehting that could happen to the British economy.

Also, do not forget that the British economy is linked in to the rest of the British Commonwealth more intricately than it is linked to Europe.

Anyhoo, only the Queen can take us in as she is the Head of State rather than that jumped up little snotrag of a prime minister!!!! (and don't even get me started ont he EU Constitution)

Going on holiday to the Canaries at least twice a year I certainly noticed the difference in prices whether it be food, entertainment etc., mind u still wouldn't stop going there. But I wouldn't like the euro for this country, things would be more expensive here then as well. I know for financiers it makes sense but I feel a referendum wouldn't go amiss on the subject

Hungary will be member of EU in 2004. And in 2007 we will get the €! I don't want neither EU nor Euro!

We need to stay away from nationalism.
The Euro would be a step in the right direction. But it's not the right step in the right direction if you catch my drift.

I don't agree with you Eyeore! I think the nation of the Earth will has got one direction in the future and that'll be nationalism. Cause at now the nationalism is in one country and that's country is USA. EU is dying. Cause for example France and Germany never be same in politics. They have hated together for 1000 years. EU is an agressive ideology but it's impossible. EU is dying. The people demonstrate against globalisation and USA all around the world but our politics say: we need democracy like in USA. No, I think we needn't... needn't like in USA!

I don't think it's even as basic as nationalism. If we look at history, all the combined/unified states such as USSR and Yuogslavia, what has happened it has crumbled and collasped, you cannot enforce a unification, especially where there is no correlation between incomes and cost of living in the various countries

The EU is not about creating a superpower.
The Soviet Union collaspsed due to immense pressure from within the Union, not because of financial problems linked with the sattelite states.
Ironically Russia is now (or wants to be, I'm not sure which) a part of the E.U.But that's not the point.
I don't like the European Union.
It hasn't done anything but force the will of other countries on others.
It restricts a country's capabilities to introduce certain laws.
And Sin is right about unification though, generally speaking.
For exapmle, the U.N. It's falling apart. It failed to stop an unjust war on Iraq.
Yes, where are these mysterious missing WOMD which they haven't found?
The U.N willl fail like it's predecessor, the League Of Nations, and so will the E.U.

We're living in sorry times.

Well, in Germany, everything's gotten more expensive now in the "Euro" times. You almost have to pay twice as much as before. But then, I actually shouldn't complain because London is supposed to be the most expensive place in Europe!

You say that the UN is failing. What will happen when Britain accepts the EU constitution ( i say WHEN not IF as I do not think that Antony Blair would have the guts to stick his head above the parapet and say no) and Britain is obliged to allow an unelected EU foriegn minister to use it's seat and vote on the UN sec.con. against our wishes. How stable can the security council remain when permenant members are no longer able to vote according to their own wishes. The splits are only now beginning......

<EDIT>
Just two little addendums to this.

1. Did anyone see the launch of the british space mission to Mars named Beagle 2. Enjoy this mission, it will be the last independent one we are permitted under the EU constitution. Article 1-17 woul force the use of ESA rather than an independent project or one with NASA.

2. Should the constituion come into effect. What would happent eh the British Commonwealth. At present, if a Commonwealth country is invaded by a hostile power we are duty bound to step in and help the country. However under Article 1-39:5 we would not be allowed to do so unless supported by the majority of the EU parliment. And since there are countries in Europe who have publicly expressed distaste at the commonwealth, such a vote would be extremely unlikely. (as a further addundum, one of the most vocal critics of the Commonwealth is a former French President named Valery Giscard d'Estaing - the chappie who has writtent he constitution.)
