I think it's a dumb idea. What does it matter if people know if your male or female?

Thought about that too...
It´s a good idea, many other forums have that too. I dunno, but somehow I´d like to know who am I speaking to. R. PS; Pud, you dont have to do that, I think it´ll be optional. |

I agree it is a dumb idea. Only with names such as Macrapper, pudding and radiomaster do you not know if it is a male or female. Most other names are clear enough IMO.
LOL ![]() But seriously it should not matter should it? If it did, why would you not just use your real names. |

I'm a man, I'm happy to be a man, I'm happily married with two kids and we're expecting another one and I've never hidden that fact.
This is supposed to be a Meat Loaf website where it doesn't matter what gender you are, what religion you are, what colour you are or which way your boat floats. Where will it end? perhaps we should have a cross if you're Christian, a star of David if you're Jewish and a crescent if you're Muslim option as well. Pud ![]() |

Yes I think I should also be allowed to pick the make and model and colour of car I drive.
Come on go and build it. It is very relevant. (Do you sense some irony in this post?) |

I dont see what is so bad on that idea. If you´re talking to somebdy in real life you see the gender too.
And it definitely doesnt matter to the quality of the posts or something else. you´re all posting like you think that it´s a problem to notice the gender. Do you really think that would change something? That nobody would talk to you anymore if they know your gender? (I know that it´s not so, but it sounds as if it is) That seems to be very controversial, I think the best idea would be to start a poll and then do what most people want. R. |

I don't think it's a bad idea to use a gender symbol.
Just like a flag or avatar - you don't have to use it if you don't want to. |

If you want to show your gender, the best bet is to put it in either your description, location text or signature.
Unlike the flags option, gender isn't a regular setting on the forums and would need a lot od coding to set up. ![]() |

Actually, the flags option is custom coding, but rather easy to implement, because there's already a 'Location:' placeholder defined in the templates that render the postbit (that's what you are looking at right now). The flag hack just adds the image code while the page is rendered. There's no need to modify any templates due to this runtime 'template injection'. Most of the template modifications on mlukfc are done with these injections.
However, a gender hack would need template modifications (adding a placeholder) and this is a pain in the butt, because as soon as you update the software to a newer release, you have to add these modifications again. We will update the forum software to vBulletin 3.6 as soon as it's available (~August/September) and because of this i won't modify anything until 3.6.x is released. I might consider this afterwards. I can however add a custom profile field, but this will be visible in the user profile only. |

Once we start displaying information such as gender in the publicly viewable profile, then we're touching on the data protection act legislations, which is a minefield that we really should be avoiding, especially since it's a different set of legislation in every country in the world near enough ...so my vote would be to avoid it like the plague.
