Default Meat Is All Over The Place

Meat Loaf is all over the place these days

November 26, 2006

Are you ready for another serving of Meat Loaf? The big rocker is back as Jack Black's father in "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny," plus he has the new "Bat Out of Hell III" CD. He also has an inspirational message to pass on to his brethren.

"The minute you're doing art for money then you're selling out your soul," Meat Loaf says. "I've never done anything for the cash."

1. How did you get cast as Jack Black's father in the "Tenacious D" film?

Jack has been talking about me playing the part of his father for the past five years. The minute he signed the deal for the film, he called me on the phone saying, "I bet you didn't think this would happen." By the way, the first time I met Jack is when VH1 was doing the movie of my life. I wanted Jack to play me. He wanted to do it, but then his career took off.

2. "Bat Out of Hell III" was just released. Can you believe there is a third one?

I did it because I felt the time was right. I'm the guy who is willing to commit and give 100 percent or I won't do something. As for "Bat 3," fans have sent me a lot of e-mails for years about another one. I kept saying, "Never say never." Even in my own heart, I didn't know I'd do a third one. After my 2003 CD, I was a pretty dejected guy. It got totally ignored everywhere and I didn't understand it. I thought that maybe my time had passed. But now with "Bat 3," everyone is interested again.

3. Is it true you wanted Scarlett Johansson to sing a song on the new "Bat" and she blew you off?

Yeah, it's true. I went and asked her. The thing is, my vocal coach is producing an album for her. So in a real casual way, I approached Scarlett. I really wanted an actor on the CD. It's theatrical. But then this story got out that I begged her to do it and she said no. I didn't beg; asked, and she said no. In fact, I recently sent her an apology letter because I shot off my mouth and told the press about this. So, for the record, I didn't beg and she didn't ditch me. You could write that I want Brad Pitt to play the female lead in my next video. Let's start some good rumors.

4. You don't talk much about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Tell us something about that experience.

I'll tell you that I've been in 43 movies now and I don't feel as close to another movie as I do with "Rocky Horror." There is a bond with me, Susan and Tim from that movie that's forever and one that I've never had with other actors. It's an interesting thing when I see Susan Sarandon or Tim Curry now. It's like no time has passed and we're all friends even though we don't talk or see each other. It was just the most fantastic movie experience of all time.

5. What is it like to tour at age 59? And will you be touring 10 years from now?

Touring is rough. ... The hardest part is staying healthy because you shake so many hands. It's hard to avoid the flu and colds. But maybe we shouldn't write that or I'll look like Howard Hughes. ... As for touring in 10 years, no way. There is not a prayer.
