Can you post the string of gibberish please?
I suspect it is all the crap that Frontpage and other WYSIWYG editors stick in tgo pad out pages. |

Erm, I hope not, because I'm just typing away in Notepad.
Gibberish: < !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" > It doesn't have spaces in it, if I don't put them in though, the whole thing vanishes when I hit post. In the meantime, I've found a heap more learners places, some say I need that gibberish for something called CSS later (whatever the hell that is, and I haven't got that far and I'm not planning to until I have this bit right), and some sites say not to bother. Which group are lying to me? Thank you, Chris. |

I am sure Chris will reply to you better but let me see what sense I make out of this and no, you don't need to understand it in order to use it...but this is a header in HTML that browser might use it to validate that it's valid HTML and valid web page.
The string of gibberish tells your editor that the file you're editing is an HTML file and gives it enough information to validate it if it wants to. CSS is Cascading Style Sheets and although not really complicated will take a little more explanation. If you're writing a lot of similar web pages CSS helps you keep them looking and feel the same way without typing pages and pages of the same code. To make this simple you save certain often used tags in a separate page with .css ending and refer to it in your html page. And that's how far my knowledge goes and no further...sorry...the rest will have to wait for Chris. |

In the meantime, I've killed off the gibberish for now, I figure I can add it in later if I need it, right? |

If your page works without "gibberish" it only means that that gibberish came from the html editor that you're not using in which case, it is, indeed a gibberish as far as I know.
If the page truly used CSS heavily, you wouldn't have been able to copy and paste it with it working properly - most of the code would be outside of the HTML page source code of which you're using and references to that code would have done nothing to help you. If you were able to copy and paste and it works - there is no reference to CSS page in the code that you've used. Why do I keep talking about stuff I know nothing about? Oh yeah...I can't sleep....sorry for any misinformation I might have given here and I am sure I will stand corrected in due time. |

Thanks, R. I was just trying to explain to a person who just learning about HTML.
But now I have a question. Although I have oversimplified definition of CSS, I thought that .dtd is more important for XML file than HTML. Is that correct? |

Right... *baffled Lotus
According to that link you gave (thanks R!) I DO need that gibberish, because it's going to tell any browser used to look at my site what version of HTML I am using, right? Next question: according to that link, there are many versions of HTML and doctypes... how the hell do I know which one to use? Sorry for being such a dumbarse. |

HA! I know what you mean! And I know which one my random typing translates into!!!!!
Thank you, R, Chris, Mszee and R. Last question for now, I promise. I have just managed lists, with dot points (unordered lists?). I can make my dots circles, hollow circles, squares, numbers, Roman Numerals... is there a way to make my dots anything else? Such as palm trees, or cricket balls, or.... ? Then I'm going to go away and shut up, I promise. |

My 'itunes' is in a different language and I don't understand anything on there. Do you know how I changed back to english? I have tried reinstalling the software but it is still in the other language.
Thanks. |

Just looking at my version, try going to the second menu list along, then the last one in the list. There should be a drop down menu at the bottom of the pop-up page which is the language option.

Erm, no... something called <ul>... I'm a beginner
Thanks for your help so far, I imagined about 20 different possibilities for how to do it at work today, so will go trial and error. One is bound to work! (There's optimism ) Thanks, Chris |

No, no, no, no, no. Learning this first bit, don't make me learn to truss ceilings before I know how to pour the slab, please. Maybe I misunderstood, I thought CSS was a template type of thingy?
Thanks for your help, R and Chris, I feel it is time to stop over-reaching though, and go back to simple. Cheers anyhow. |

OK guys letīs see if anybody can help me:
A friend from the forum sent me a dvd which he recorded from a particular Meat Loaf wembley 82 vhs. I was very disappointed that the sound and the pictures dont run synchron, the sound is about 10 sec ahead of the pictures. The weird thing is that itīs getting worse with the time, the beginning is still synchron, but itīs getting worse with the time. (I think the sound may be a wee bit faster than the video, thatīs the only explanation i can think of). Any ideas how I could fix it? (please speak in a language a dummy like me understands) |
