I wasn't really interested in this subject but looked at the site you've provided and it clearly says that I am right...

short adjectives: add "-er"

Short adjectives
1-syllable adjectives
old, fast
2-syllable adjectives ending in -y

long adjectives: use "more"

Long adjectives
2-syllable adjectives not ending in -y
modern, pleasant
all adjectives of 3 or more syllables

Clever is 2 syllables and doesn't end in "y"

What confused me is that it says that 3 syllables and up are long...regardless how they end...
