The ipod I had kept breaking...though jumping up and down on it might've been the reason for that

oh - I thought that the apple people were trying to get you to buy earphones to fix your ipod and get you to waste some money...

didnt work, said a driver was missing.
told me to uninstall all apple products completely and reinstall them again.
after that it said that the driver was found, yet nothing was working lol.
tried to phonethem again, but they only work till 8

What sort of i-Pod is it, RJ? I have a video one with the wheel on the front, and an i-Pod touch. The first one was fine, the second wasn't recognised, and I went onto the apple site and their support docs, (can't remember what i did, mind you, but apparently it's a common problem with the i-Pod touch) but it sorted it out...

i have an i pod nano, the new one with the video function...
the guy at the hotline said it was a common problem, too.
