Default future singles

was just wondering when meat loaf releases future singles, what format will they be in? ok there is the physical single release [ coming to an end ] and the downloaded version [ i tunes ] , just this week annie lennox released a download only single, so will this be what meat attempts? would everybody download and pay for a meat single? [ i know myself i would, a few hundred times ] jokes aside, what does everybody think? the scary part is if it all becomes download only will that be the end of charting singles for meat or will it maybe help? its all coming back to me entered the uk 75 singles chart at 43 on downloads [ and then rocketed when it was released in shops ]
so what way will it work best for meat?

Obviously if that was the only way to get it, I would pay to download it, but I am a bit old fashioned and like to have an actual CD copy, so hope he won't go that road. Plus not everybody has a computer, and it's annoying the way it's assumed everybody has one these days. I only got one a couple of years ago.

Well, I am "of the computer generation" but I hate to download music. What do you actually get for your money? A copy of a file, just data! Data that might be compressed to an extent that it sounds crap! I think it's kind of sad, although I never was very fond of singles (I prefer to buy albums - on CD or vinyl).

But I see that it might not pay off to release singles on CD anymore. The singles shelves in the stores have gotten smaller and smaller, they usually contain the Top 10 and only a few further singles. Avarage consumers hardly buy a single on CD anymore. They just need the song to put it on their mobile or MP3 players, they usually aren't that much interested in high audio quality or what the cover looks like.

Regarding sales figures: Let's assume a new Meat Loaf single will be available via download only. I don't think that it has anything to do with the age of the artist or the potential buyers whether it will be a hit or not. Just remember what happened in 1993. Anything and Bat II didn't become that successful because of the support by a handful of "old" die-hard fans. A large number of young people who had never heard of Meat Loaf before bought the single and the album, due to the quality of the product and excellent marketing.
(Just about a year ago I overheard a conversation among teenagers in a streetcar. They were talking about music - from 1950s rock 'n' roll to Metallica - and suddenly one of them asked "Do you know Meat Loaf?" and immediately someone else said "Oh yes, Anything For Love, I got the entire album, he is so cool!")

Although the market share of vinyl has grown while that of CDs is constantly dropping I'm afraid the sales of vinyl singles are too little to let a song climb to the top of the charts. But I hope they'll keep the tradition of releasing Meat Loaf singles on vinyl as collector's items. I didn't buy the Bat III singles on CD but I purchased the vinyl picture discs. (I hope the new album will be relased on vinyl, too, as I collect them.)

Just a thought regarding why "old" artists don't sell that many singles anymore: Maybe their audience is rather interested in entire albums than in single songs? The main reason for me to buy a single is because I like a particular song but can do without the album. Honestly, a lot of albums by "new" artists contain one or two nice songs and the rest are fillers. But when I buy a Meat Loaf album, I know I will like most of its content.

Your logic escapes me, as usual. How does availability of singles as downloads stop crinklies from going to the shops to buy CDs?

You'd have been far better off making the point that singles are predominantly bought by young people, whereas oldies prefer buying albums. This is not a new phenomenon.

The actual difference that downloads are making is that people can pick and choose which tracks they want off an album, rather than having to buy the whole thing.

The thing I like about CD singles is that you usually get at least 3 or 4 songs, whereas in the days of vinyl you only ever got 2. The thing with downloading, you will probably only get the actual single. I always liked how they have songs not on the album or live tracks on CD singles, which you won't get if it's only available to download.

It's good to have one. There are records that sound more interesting than their CD counterparts. I own the half speed mastered Bat Out Of Hell from 1980 and I hear nuances on that record I don't notice on the CD.

Those extra songs are an inducement to buy a CD single. I don't think I would download a single song if I was going to purchase the whole album on CD.

I wouldn't download a single, not because I didn't want it but simply because I couldn't be arsed. I am a complete techno-phobe, I don't own an Ipod, I don't do touchscreen, Bluetooth...none of it, so for me downloading really would be a hassle! If by some miracle I did manage to go to the download site, find the right thing, pay for it and download it correctly (by which time I'm 40!) I'd then find that I had to download some super flash something to play it on...can't be arsed. I would rather go to the shop and buy a CD/vinyl/cassette or otherwise!

Same here.
I wouldn't know the first thing about how to start buying download music.
I still use a CD walkman rather than an ipod
I even prefare buying from the shops rather than ordering from a company like Amazon (which i've never used )

Besides the other reasons for being against downloads, I think going to the shop to buy your music is more fun.
If Meat brings out a new release, I think it's better to put on your fave Meat T shirt of the moment, head into town, pick up one of each format the single is available in, and when you've got your records, take yourself off for something to eat (even if it's only a macies)before going home and having a good listen

That seems more of an event than double clicking on this then right clicking on that and watching a status bar while drinking a luke warm cup of tea .

Oh absolutely! Springsteen's new album came out at the end of January and it was lovely to look forward to the release and go to the shop to pick it off the shelf, that's half the excitement for me!

While we're on it, can we have 8 track, reel to reel and Betaamx releases as well please?

Such modern ideas are beyond me

I could only listen to Bat III by hiring this guy to follow me around.

I always read your messages correctly. Unfortunately that doesn't always help. Let's look at what you actually said:

Quote:
thats true carole! thats why older artists dont sell so many singles anymore as the majority of there fan bases are not of the computer generation!!
So what you actually said was that older artists are (as in NOW) selling fewer singles, because their fanbases are not of the download generation. You did NOT say that they WILL sell less if these artists stop selling physical singles.

So, rather than telling people to read your messages properly, how about reading them yourself to see if they say what you were thinking when you wrote them?

Nope. I buy (on CD, or download very rarely) what I want to listen to. If an artist has something I want enough, I'll buy it. Nothing to do with "supporting" anyone.
