In several threads on this forum there have been discussions regarding YouTube videos recently being removed on request by Red Pony Tours. I'm not going to elaborate on whether this is good or bad, neither favor nor condemn unapproved uploads / copyright infringement. I just want to tell a little story and I'll leave it to you how to interpret it. That's why I'm deliberately posting this in a seperate thread, the mods may forgive me.
At the end of the 1990s, I suddenly lost interest in Meat Loaf, I can't tell why. I still liked his music, enjoyed his amusing TV appearances at that time, loved his performance in Fight Club (my favorite movie) but I wasn't really a "fan" anymore. He was just one artist among many others. On a rainy night a few years ago, I accidentally stumbled over a video on YouTube that featured a f*cking cool guitar player. I kept watching the video because of that guy. Suddenly the singer of the band showed up and I thought: "Good Lord, it's Meat Loaf!" He looked a little different, had obviously gained some weight again but his performance was one of the best I had ever seen. Since the clip appeared to be a professional shot, I tried to find out where it was from. A few hours later I purchased a DVD called Meat Loaf live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - it became one of my favorite concert DVDs. I got hooked to Meat Loaf again, spent countless nights watching Meat Loaf videos on YouTube, discovered a lot of exciting stuff I had never seen before. (Yeah, I know there are better things to do at night and dragging yourself to the office being extremely tired is not good. ![]() It was YouTube (and the amazing Paul Crook ![]() Thanks for reading this tiresome novel. Tomorrow, when the effect of the chocolate punch has ceased, I'll probably kick myself for revealing this. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Sarge; 11 Jan 2010 at 21:14. |

yt in the right context is a great tool for an artist to gain new fans and re-connect with lost ones.
you're story is cool, and i see where you're coming from ![]() So many artists don't object to videos being on there, many have their own official pages, i follow a few on there, as their websites are either poor or they dont have one. In the case of Dolly Parton, i check in every two months for her video diary (now there's something i'm gonna regret revealing lol) but it makes my point of yt as a tool rather than a hinderence to the artist. btw if you search for Dolly Parton live concert vids, you won't find any, that's because she has them taken down no sooner they are uploaded, but she doesnt mind tv appearances being on there, maybe something for Meat to consider. |

that's one of those things where you can see times are changing. Ten years ago that wouldnt have been possible. It would have been on tv or the radio.
It's interesting, when I want info on an artist I check youtube for music videos, live performances, documentaries, etc. (btw, just watched an interesting documentary on the highwaymen, wouldnt have ever seen that without youtube). For kids who grow up today doing things like that will be the most normal thing in the world (or even old fashioned again). sorry for getting a little nostalgic at night lol |

I hope Meat Loaf's new page will contain an equally interesting video section. Last edited by Sarge; 13 Jan 2010 at 20:12. |
