Songs that sound better in the studio?
What songs do people thing sound better on the album? No matter how hard Meat may try, when singing it live he can't better the studio version. Note that I'm not knocking Meat's effort, just that the originals are better.

With respect I don't agree with most of those. Most of those sound better live imo simply because he conveys the emotion of the song better live.

Personally I prefer I'd do anything for love live. The Monsters loose works better in the studio to in my opinion

It's not really possible to do FCOL better live, because it's one of hardest songs to sing anyway. I thought some of his versions of AFL and RNR Dreams were done very well live.

Objects there's such an amazing live version of that on live around the world, again it's the emotion that makes it. Anything for love, well take your pick really, there's been some amazing performances of this song, couldn't pick one in particular but again better live for me. Rock and roll dreams, same as above really, some incredible performances of that, and he still does it great now! Much better live imo. Blind as a bat was great in concert all through the 3 bats tour, better live for me. Nowhere fast, was great at Bottom Line 1985. The last 3 I haven't really heard live so i'll have to agree. But generally I always prefer his live performances to the studio recording simply because he can convery so much more emotion and story with his on stage performances. Anyway it's only my opinion which means **** lol |

While it might not be as vocally perfect, I prefer Blind As A Bat on the Casa Live CD better than the album version. Meat's voice sounds great on it and the arrangement is much better than the studio version - it's got that piano thunder sadly missing from Bat 3's songs. The album version also has far too many audible splices where Meat's voice has been cut and pasted so he's not singing the whole line in one go.
AFL was also done better live at the Brits in 1994 IMO but it's close. |

I always thought that AFL was far better on the album until I saw Meat perform it live on the CHSIB Tour a few years ago and he blew me away with the emotion he packed into it.
I think what I prefer on the album version is the higher pitch that Meat comes in at. On the live renditions over the past few years Meat has really bellowed the opening line (which I think he's said he does partly because he wants to pack more emotion into the start of the song). The live versions also tend to cut out the "when I watch you dance and the thunder rolls" verse which is my favourite part of the album song (which I understand is for timing purposes). In terms of reciorded live versions I think the LATW recording most closely resembles the album version. Pretty much every song from Bat 1 I actually prefer live, especially since I found out Meat's voice was sped up!!! |

The start of the album version of FCOL always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up....its perfection.
What I like about the Melbourne show is the emotion Meat puts into the song though. There's something quite epic about Meat sat there obviously quite nervous and reading the lyrics from the pages on the ground- yet still delivering THAT performance. He could have blown it off and included a 'sound check' version for the Live CD, but the guy sat there heroically infront of a huge audience and delivered. |

I love the album versions because I have them and can listen to them any time I want. But like others I'll take the live version always over any album version because of the extra passion Meat packs into a performance. Blind As A Bat was stunning at the RAH. Objects live has on occasion moved me to tears. Did I Say That was wonderful the night I heard him sing it live, and he has delivered some spectacular AFLs in so many shows. Rock and Roll Dreams was superb in the US this year, and I loved seeing the songs from HCTB performed live, particularly Los Angeloser.
As for FCOL, he sat on a stool and sung it right the way through at the Storytellers concert I attended and it was simply the best, most passionate and electric performance I have ever heard from Meat. At the end as the final note died away you could have heard a pin drop .. and then a massive roar of applause as the audience jumped to its feet. Must have been very close to what happened at the CBS conference so may years ago .. except we had no tables to stand on Magnificent. Caryl |

I wish I could have been there for that Caryl, from what you and others who were there have said, it was a magnificent performance. I agree about the albums, I love the recorded versions, but nothing beats a live performance. And I must admit there are a few faves from some of them, that I would love to hear a live version of. I know Meat has said he will never do Alive in concert, but I think it would be stunning if he did. It is such a moving song, it would be amazing to hear it in concert. I see another poll being done about this. Songs we'd like to hear live that haven't ever been done.

On the HCTB tour, I think it's the best versions of AFL and RNR Dreams I've ever heard. Although on AFL, the backing vocals are not as good without Kasim. The duet part is flawless though. I saw a Youtube clip of IICHY at soundcheck. Unfortunately, it was quickly removed. That song sounds MUCH better live.
