A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on his face. The egg, looking a bit fed up, grabs the sheet, rolls over and says, "Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question."

What *exactly* does the moon have to do with the tides....this confuses me.

The moon causes the tides.

Basically the Earth is spinning at a relatively steady speed and the oceans are trapped by the atmosphere and gravity so basically just sit there and not do much.

However the moon is following the WEarth around like the geeky kid at schoool trying to be cool by following the popular jocks round!. Since the moon has gravity, it pulls on the Earth. The solid bits of the earth are quite happy to sit there and not move but the water thinks "aha, this could be fun, lets get pulled a bit by the bravity of the moon". So it does, and as the moon pulls it the water moves leading to tides.

And everyday the tides are at slightly different heights and times because the moon is in a different place everyday.

Q. Would it have been better to just say "because it does!!"?

Yes it is 13 weeks until the C word hits us.... unless of course your name is Gerry, then you have to buy everyone humungous pressies every week ~ starting with the ones you've watered.

Q: Why do shops start stocking Christmas stuff so early, Tescos has theirs in already ~ selection boxes and Christmas puds.
