Just a reminder that the Q Awards will be covered live from the Grosvenor House Hotel beginning at 12 noon today.

Listen to it here.

Just read this on the BBC news website:

"Meat Loaf turned up at the ceremony sporting a cut eye and looking unwell, telling reporters he would have to visit a doctor because he was suffering from vertigo."

Hope it doesn't completely ruin his big day.

This is probably just one of those things I completely miss the point of, but can you not only get Vertigo (fear of heights? Right?) in high places?

Doesn't sound too good about the cut eye though.
Hope the big guy is OK.

Yes the vertigo thing confused me too, perhaps he was suffering from it and is now recovering?

Either way I hope he's still able to enjoy receiving his award

That doesn't sound good, get well soon Mr Loaf

This is from the News page on the Q site which is being updated through the day:

Steinman says Bat reflects his philosophy
Bat Out Of Hell‘s writer Jim Steinman said today that the song was “a perfect reflection of my creed”.

The legendary composer – who wrote the song for the album of the same name – said he created the track to be “the ultimate crash song”, “operatic annihilation” and a little piece of "Wagner".

After hearing the track was named Classic Song at today’s Q Awards, he said: “In the interest of being pompous, profound, and pretentious all at the same time, as well as being self-deprecating, even self-lacerating, and brilliant simultaneously, I can truly say that BAT OUT OF HELL is a perfect reflection of my creed: ‘If you don’t go over the top, you’ll never see what’s on the other side”.

“’Bat’ was a complete song after two choruses, at six-plus minutes long. But I thought it was too short - no, incomplete. It needed more! So I toiled away and came up with the final third of the song, starting at: “I can see myself, tearing up the road, FASTER, than any other boy has ever gone……” - and this evolved into the whole CRASH sequence, ending with “the last thing I see is my heart/still beating/still beating/breaking out of my body and flying away ……. Like a BAT OUT OF HELL!”

“Then it was complete. It had been a great driving-racing-speed anthem, plus a suitably obsessive love story, but now it was what I wanted all along: THE ULTIMATE CRASH SONG!! SELF-DESTRUCTION! OPERATIC ANNIHILATION!!!!!!
A LOVE DEATH!!!!! LITTLE RICHARD WAGNER!!!!

“Thus, if I hadn't gone OVER THE TOP, I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN WHAT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE. Which I really loved. And which, to this f***ing day, I still love. END OF STORY; AND THANK YOU, Q & MEAT. (That sounds like a distant relative of Spotted Dick: Q & MEAT!)”

Typical Jim! Thanks for that Lucy. Very happy that Q spoke to Jim for his views on "Bat". Nice that he not only thanks Q but Meat also.

Latest Meat update on the Q news page:

Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell landed the title of Classic Song today at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The huge worldwide hit – written by his early collaborator Jim Steinman – was recognised by Q magazine for its incredible staying power.

Collecting the prize, Loaf exchanged banter with award presenter Al Murray, asking him to repeat a breakneck, off the cuff introduction prior to taking the stage. But after Murray was unable to remember what he had said, Loaf asked: “Could you say something else?”

“I like your hair,” quipped the comic. “I like your hair too, Loaf responded.

Murray shot back: “We’ve got a future you and me.” After Loaf’s failed attempt to sing some Queen songs at Murray’s suggestion, the comic concluded Shall we go to the pub and do that?”

No idea Lucy but he must be crushed to have travelled to the UK for the award only to be taken ill.

Adding on from the Official Q Awards site:

"The singer appeared hesitant and not quite at his usual voluble top form as he took to the stage.

His publicist said later that the singer was suffering from vertigo and was shaken by an eye injury on the way to the awards event".

Doesn't sound good....

Also on that page is a small clip of him talking to a presenter - literally 5 seconds...
