First, I made that first comment just because I happened to pretty much agree with everything Sarge said. Even without Dave's post right before it, it would quite possible have been exactly the same. For me, those CHSIB, right you are, couldn't agree more kind of post have very little value to me, but in my opinion it's still better than a button that adds nothing to the conversation.

Secondly, my second post was made because I happened to agreed with Caryl. Discussion indeed seems pretty pointless when people don't read posts and keep re-iterating the same points over and over again, ad nauseum. I'll have to plead guilty on phrasing that agreement as snarkily as possible though.

Unfortunately that has been caused by several incidents that happened on this forum.

You're probably referring to the technical aspect of the matter. I rather thought of the social and psychological aspect.

The reason why I think it's childish is not users who sincerely agree or disagree with a post and express that by clicking one of the buttons but because of the possibility that it will become "political", as chairboys put it.

So what is it people dislike? The content? The wording? The person who submitted the post? The fact that the person agreed with someone they don't like or disagreed with someone they like?

Will people be discouraged to participate in discussions if they get a lot of "dislikes"? Will those who get a lot of "likes" will feel that their posts are more important than others?

Thanks for clarifying, I referred to Caryl's post that mentioned the "fixing thread".

My statement was intended to point out the issue with the missing names in the dislike section. Of course people will wonder who disliked their posts and why - and that will lead to (maybe false) associations and suspicion.

Edit: Just saw that the "dislike" names are visible now. Certain factions that already exist just seem to become more evident. Don't know if that's a good thing.

I like the button thing. I think it is great R. is customising the board so much. Besides Facebook and Twitter this is the only online forum/community I've really visited a lot over the last decade (well maybe 1-2 years on MySpace which has vanished of my radar entirely) so I think R. must be doing something right to keep me entertained. The bog standard PHP forums you get are pretty lame and boring to navigate through and most of them die a silly death. I like the work R. does and I'm not sucking up. If you look at the bad reactions the board gets on Rockman I think it is obvious the majority prefer the board we have here and to continue to keep adding a few things here and there to keep things fresh and interesting. If anything the buttons will encourage more interaction I think.
People always moan about changes, look at the crap that is on Facebook "I don't like Timeline, I am going to close my account, neh neh neh". In the end we don't pay anything for this stuff so if the board changes, it changes in my opinion. If you had to use Facebook as it was in 2006 now you would think it looks silly and very dated. Same goes for old version of this board.

The buttons could also be a way in for the many visitors to the site who don't post.

Would it be worth making the font used for the list of likers/dislikers slightly smaller, to better differentiate it from the signature of the post above?

There is a new mobile style that supports the Like/Dislike function now. If it doesn't get selected automatically while using your phone, scroll down and use the Style Selector to change to "Mobile MLUKFC".

Ignore that, it must be something to do with my screen settings.

I thought R had been fixing more stuff on the forum, but then I went off the site and everything else was the same, so I kew it was either a problem with my settings or R has a lot more influence over the internet than i'd given him credit for

It's fixed now
