doesn't drink to get drunk. we've all seen him swig a beer on stage, and he does talk about a shot or two of tequila before a show, but that doesn't mean he drinks himself drunk.

Yeah, fair enough. I guess I don't understand enough about the vertigo to believe that anything aside from drugs or alcohol can do that to someone's speech, comprehension and self-awareness.

I hope he gets better soon, whatever the problem may be.

PS - Meat also said that he got his name when a VW ran over his head...!

There's a few overblown comments being made and some people need to take a chill pill.

Meat went to the awards out of his own choosing even though he apparently knew he wasn't well long before he went. No it's not nice to see him like this, but it was his choice to go.

And if you didn't know Meat and saw him stumbling out of a car you'd automatically think he'd had a drink or three, which asking for an autograph is fair game. The general public in Britain aren't armed with the knowledge about Meat Loaf, his drinking habits or his medical conditions like some people on here.

Pud pretty much sums it up. It's really ashame to see him like this as it is just a very bad impression people will get of him, whether or not we like it or accept it.

I couldn't have said it better....

...I've always wanted to do that. Ha!

He had the opportunity to pass on the awards and could have sent a message explaining his absence. The fact that he carried on and nobody stopped him is quite worrying.

That's true but he had travelled all the way from the usa and what he said was he became unwell on the morning of the awards. So if i was him i would have made the effort to turn up after travelling so far.
I didn't think it was that bad yes he stubbled when he got out of the car, so people thought he was drunk. He's a grown man and if he had decided to get blattered before hand then that would be his choice why should someone have stopped him?
My missus always tells me i've had enough when were on a night out and i don't listen to her!

Well, I've finally got around to listening to the clips. As I've expected it was all blown out of proportion...it sounded to me like typical Meat albeit very much tired...which is understandable.

And now for the question...should he...shouldn't have he...I thought about it for a while and my first reaction was..well, he probably shouldn't have...

And then...you have to remember...this is MEAT...large than life Meat who probably at 61 still thinks he is 21...it is very hard to live your life being this bear of a man and face the reality of being older now...I for one understand very well...so...he did what he thought was best and that's that...

Regardless of who you are or how far you've travelled it's no excuse to ignore the warning signs about your health. Meat threw caution to the wind, no one asked him to and no one stopped him. It is sad to see him in that state but I'd rather not see him at all if he isn't well.

I honestly think if the case was that he wasn't feeling well before the awards, he just might have overestimated himself...you know...the older we get...the younger we think we are...unfortunately, most of us will feel this way sooner or later...

Do not misunderstand me, I am not looking for any excuses...I am just looking for possible explanations...

Of course he wasn't feeling well before the awards, he said that himself, he woke up with vertigo, the room was spinning around and he needed to see a Doctor, those are his words not mine. He stumbled out of the car, didn't look at all well, stumble up on stage, mumbled some incoherent sentence, got bundled off the stage by Al Murray, then went to see a Doctor.

If health is less important than recieving a crappy looking award then so be it. Personally I'd have gotten someone to accept it on my behalf, like what Pearl did for Meat at the Classic Rock Awards not too long ago.

Strikes me this was a no win situation for Meat.

He wakes up on the morning of the awards and he feels unwell ... if he cancels his appearance there's the risk of the negative headlines and stories regarding him pulling out of attending. So, he turns up and what doe she get? Negative headlines and stories regarding him attending.

You so gotta get better

PS>> Look on the rbight side, HE attended it no matter what, so thats what counts. At least he didn't stay in his hotel room (if you get what I mean)

I agree, Meat is a real trouper still attending even though he was unwell.

Also after reading the articles, why do poeple always assume he drinks and appear drunk! I think he's genuinly ill and not drunk!!! Makes me mad - they can't seem to take his word!!!!!
It annoys me too, the press just seen to look for any excuse to have a go at Meat. They really need to get their facts straight instead of jumping to concclusions. and writing rubbish about him.

I personally think Meat should not have attended either, and instead got someone else to receive the award for him.

Very well said Pud. Meat wasn't well, he's now recovering, I think we should now get back to the main point of the thread which is the great news that Bat Out Of Hell has been recognised in such a way and given the award

The link that AndrewG posted (just above this post if I'm typing quick enough ) quips that actually it was Jim who wrote the song not Meat, does anyone know if Jim was mentioned at the ceremony?

Meat tried to mention Jim, he said something along the lines of " Jim......Jimmy... " and then made the 'over the top' quote.

More news on Meat;

Meat Loaf's dizzy day

SHOCK ! Meat Loaf rushed to hospital

Meat Loaf blames rambling speech on 'vertigo'.

Clickety-Click

I have to agree with Andy's post, Meat's damned if he is and damned if he isn't, either way the papers would find some reason to make or get a negative story but I do feel it's unfair that all the media seem to focus on is his health and not the accomplishment that Bat has acheived in getting this recognition.
I wish Meat a speedy recovery.

Because he's not in the public eye as much anymore (in terms of being a huge selling artist or appearing on MTV etc daily and weekly) any small thing he does that can be shown as an out of the ordinary story will be published and hey at the end of it all, he is there to be shot at (so to speak)

No such thing as bad publicity at the end of the day and maybe if it does one thing it will be to sell a few more copies of Bat from some of the younger Q readers.

Im not an expert on this, but I think if he wouldnt attend a ceremony like this twice in a row, it might have some effect. For example that he wouldnt get awarded anymore at all, as people wouldnt expect him to show up, etc
