Default HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCK 'N' ROLL!!!

Today is the 50th birthday of rock 'n' roll and it's still going strong!

It's exactly 50 years ago today that Elvis recorded "That's Alright Mama" at the Sun Studios in Memphis.

You can read the BBC news story on: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...ic/3866067.stm

"That's All Right" will be simultaneously broadcast worldwide to over 1,000 radio stationsat 1700 BST. Take a look at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5173425/ to see what's planned!

. . .This is not the official birthday of rock 'n' roll. Elvis did not invent Rock 'n' Roll. . .

Thank you Rob I'm glad someone said it. I'm sure it was invented by the black slaves but then I never listen to my friend when she gives her long lectures so don't hold me to that.

I hate lecturing too. . .

But still.

The slaves invented the blues. From this came Jazz, and swing. One day someone decided to put a rapid piano chord progression over a jazz song and invented Rock 'n' Roll. Elvis Presley invented popularised, watered-down rock 'n' roll.

Default home-page

On the home-page of MEATLOAFonline (just scroll down) is a quote of Meat Loaf. It tells where he thinks Rock and Roll comes from and what it is about, according to him.....

Ankie.

(Sorry mods, but I do not know how to put a link in a message, so I typed the name of a website here; does that mean a life-long ban over here for me ? Please DON'T!! If you must ban me for this, edit this the way it is supposed to be written....
I stayed on topic though )

Don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger!!!

I don't think anyone would argue that Elvis "invented" rock 'n' roll and there is no doubt rock 'n' roll was conceived by black Americans and grew from the slaves singing in the fields.

At a time when black music was looked down upon by white people, it took a white artist to break it to a mass, world wide audience. It seems to be widely accepted that the 5th July, 1954 was the day black culture met white culture and rock 'n' roll exploded into the world and the genre was "born".

It may have been popularised, watered down rock 'n' roll but it was still a pivotal point in music history.

Agreed.

There would have been no Beatles had this not happened.
