Top Of The Pops Review
Hey everyone!
Has anybody else been on the TOTP website?! Because Meat's on the show this week they have a review on his mon the site. I think you should check it out! http://www.bbc.co.uk/totp/lineup/artist6.shtml The review is disgraceful! It is unfair and disrespectful to a man who has worked on the music scene for 30 years or so and produced many epic anthems which still sell highly todayBat Out Of Hell is currently in the Top 40 albums chart). To say that its a 'good thing' that this is Meat's last tour, clearly demonstrates that the reviewer is writing for a young audience and makes no attempt to let the young listeners decide for themselves. I have written a strongly worded letter to Top Of The Pops demanding the review to be altered. I doubt it will make a difference, but it infuriates me so much! Please tell me your views. Yours, Greavzyboy |

I just got a reply from Top Of The Pops:
Hi Ryan, Thanks for your email. As you may be aware, the majority of readers of the TOTP website are teenagers - many of whom are probably unaware of Meat Loaf's previous work with the exception, maybe, of his cameo appearance in Spice World. With this in mind, our lineup preview was written in such a way to appeal to our readership and introduce them to Meat Loaf's musical legacy. If you check around the site at our daily news and previous lineups, you'll see that we often have a cheeky pop at the stars. I do hope your realise that this is not a reflection on the writer's opinion of Meat Loaf. We at the website all think that 'Dead Ringer' is one of the finest pop tunes ever! Additionally, TOTP is about to give him a great deal of coverage on the TOTP2 show as well. On that point, you might want to check out the TOTP2 website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/totp2 where you'll find some great Meat Loaf content, including some exclusive archive photographs. What does everyone think to that? Yours, Greavzyboy |

Well Greazy .. typical of the beeb I'd say .. interesting that they describe Meat as "an old man" and Gloria Gaynor as " a survivor" .. but it's so much easier to criticise than create eh?
I'd still like to thank them for having at least the sense and good taste to include Meat in this weeks show as David says .. we must be positive .. ) .. |

No idea .. would like to think they mean a special devoted to Meat Loaf as they do sometimes with major artists .. but knowing the beeb they could just mean showing a previous song ..
Perhaps Greavsey could ask now he has a contact? |

That "special" idea would be fantastic! I remeber they did one when one of Robbies previous albums was first released.
Imagine....a whole 30mins of Meat singing. mike |

I've just read the review again and I'm not convinced that the reviewer was being nasty. To say that its a good thing that we shall not see the likes of Meat Loaf again after his last tour does not necessarily mean the reviewer is saying "good riddance".
Perhaps is was meant in a way as to say we shouldn't see the likes of him again, as Meat is the one and only, and no one could come close or corner his market in the future. Any one stupid enough to try would be jeered out of the industry. Am I making sense? This point of view is mine alone, and I invite any comments. Whatdy'all think? Am i off centre here? mikey |

" Sadly, the Meat-man has recently called time on his live work, announcing that this shall be the last album he tours. So, enjoy him while you can. We shall not see his like again...which is probably a good thing, right? "
Personally i didn't take this to be an insult either. I actually got more positive out of it than bad. Then again different people take different meanings from things so im not saying im right but: They say sadly, then enjoy him while you can, and then say you will not see his like again - which i take as positive. when they say "is probaly a good thing...right? " I take this to be them writing to their teenage audience the way they understand, i dont think they are getting at Meat but maybe having a joke or something. Im with melis on this one! Talking of specials, anyone heard anything about the VH1 Video night? An Air Date? |

They have to use the word 'POP' afterall it's in their name. Its called Top of the POPS and theyve allowed a ROCK legend to perform on it dispite being a pop show. We should be grateful that way, even Meat said that we should write a letter to the producer of TOTP thanking him for screening Meat this Friday. He said the producer likes him. I dont like TOTP at all, but all the people on this forum are giving it is NEGATIVE. Meats agreement withTOTP was theyll show him if he makes the top 30. He didn't and TOTP are still showing him anyway - they didnt have to so we should give them at least a little bit of a thank you in that sense.!!!!

Couldn't agree more. I've already expressed my appreciation to TOTP via email.

Blurb
I thought their blurb on Meat was otherwise good. It didn't really make any judgement about him except for that bit at the end, simply describing his successes. Most of it was in a neutral tone and I thought it could have stayed that way.
But I think the positives (exposure for Meat) outweigh the negatives and I won't be making any complaints to TOTP. |

I'm just off to read the review now, but before I trott off, I just want to put my two-penn'orth in. This is the age of mediocrity, where pleasure seems to be gained only from the trivial and the small (why do you think so much is made of 'ordinary people' becoming pop-stars and celebs?), seems that any real passion or intensity in the music industry is dead amongst new acts, even metal and punk bands just seem like they're faking it to me. Musical talent has pretty much always been overlooked in favour of the right look of the time, seriousness and intense emotion seems to be mocked and ridiculed.
Damn! I've been on this soapbox so long that it's BECOME part of my feet! |
