Default Masters Of Horror Interview

While doing a search I came across this interesting interview for Master Of Horror, Pelts.

Masters of Horror: Meat Loaf Interview
By Daniel Robert Epstein

For an American actor to work with the infamous Italian giallo director, Dario Argento, is a rare and, from what I hear, always pleasurable experience. But when you add the energy and slight insanity of legendary musician Meat Loaf, it creates something really special. Argento cast Meat Loaf in his sophomore Masters of Horror episode, "Pelts," as a fur dealer who is given some beautiful raccoon pelts with the magical ability to make anyone who encounters them go insane.

UGO: Did you know that Dario Argento was going to be directing this when you got the script?

MEAT LOAF:
Yeah but I had no clue who Dario Argento was. My daughter, Amanda, is an actress and she knew who Dario was. I said to her, "They've offered me this thing directed by Dario Argento." She went, "Oh my God, Dad, you have to do that." So there you go.

UGO: Had you seen any of his movies and just not recognized the name?

MEAT LOAF: No, I've never seen any of his movies.

UGO: So how was it working with him?

MEAT LOAF: It was fantastic. I weigh him in at one of my five favorite directors I've worked with.

UGO: He does such sick things. What did he do to put you at ease on set?

MEAT LOAF: Nothing [laughs]. In the beginning we talked because there was some stuff in the script that I just said, "I really can't go there." So he just changed some stuff in the script for me. Then after that we just did what we did.

UGO: So some things you weren't okay with but you were okay with cutting off all your skin?

MEAT LOAF: Yeah, that was fine. It was basically showing my ass to the camera. I said to him, "People would rather not see my ass." If I was Brad Pitt, then yeah.

UGO: Was that coat made of the pelts nice?

MEAT LOAF: [laughs] No, it wasn't a nice coat. That is some real acting there. Since it is Showtime it wasn't a big budget but I thought it was real well done and real well directed. The funniest part was when we first saw the pelts and we're supposed to go, "Those are the best things I've ever seen in my life." I had to pull all my abilities to convince the world how great those pelts were.

UGO: In reading some stuff online today, some people really see an anti-fur message in this movie. Do you think it's really there?

MEAT LOAF: Yeah, if you think that you're going to buy a fur coat and the fur's going to attack you then yeah, that's an anti-fur message.

UGO: Dario has some pretty interesting personal philosophies. Did he talk about anything like that with you?

MEAT LOAF: No, just about his daughter. He said to me, "I've put my daughter in compromising positions, so don't mind if I put you in some."

UGO: Did you and John Saxon have any scenes together?

MEAT LOAF: No, we didn't. The only time that he was with me is when off camera he read his side of our phone conversation. But just being in the room with someone who had worked with so many great people was unbelievable. So just having him talk to you on the other end of a phone is amazing.

UGO: How was it doing the scene where you have to strip off all your skin?

MEAT LOAF: Once they had me in the prosthetic, I let the blood knife run on my own skin. I did that because my character was in such a mental place, that when he was cutting himself there really was no pain so that was how I played it. I knew that if we didn't have a technical malfunction we would do it in one take. It took me about 25 minutes to recover after we did it.

UGO: Oh wow. I know you haven't done too much horror but your episode of Monsters is one of my favorites.

MEAT LOAF: Wow I haven't seen that in 20 years. Franco Harris from the Pittsburgh Steelers was in that with me.

UGO: Are you a horror fan yourself?

MEAT LOAF: No. [laughs] I like the old Dracula movies. I've never really watched any of the Freddy movies or Scream. I never saw, what's the guy with the hockey mask?

UGO: Jason from Friday the 13th.

MEAT LOAF: Yeah, I never watched those.

UGO: Did you tell Dario you're not such a big fan?

MEAT LOAF: Oh yeah. He knew that going in. He was a little taken aback and he wasn't sure that I would be right for it. But after two or three hours he knew we were fine.

UGO: Would you want to work with him again?

MEAT LOAF: Absolutely. If he called me today, I'd work with him, yes.
