Fortunately, STN was one of the few songs in DotV that Crapford didn't get a chance to ruin.

Nope, not MB. Maybe his "personality" was so strong he rubbed off on some of the others ...

I don't think he was awful...I think he was downright scary...scared me watching bits and pieces on youtube...don't think I could have been able to handle the entire thing...kudos to Andy for surviving it...

If you're talking of bootlegs then I got one of those too, actually I got given several but threw most of them away for being absolutely crap, but I digress slightly.

The bootlegs don't show how crappy the sets were, nor how bad the lighting or effects were, on the contrary, they were very good. But Crawford spoiled the whole thing with his crap acting, crap singing and enforcing his crap ideas into the script and direction.

Yeah, from I've seen on the youtube it seems to have been mainly interpretation of the entire part of Krolok...which was (I think) as far from what Steinman had in mind as we're from the complete and total communism...

It wasn't so much the interpretation of Krolock, as Crawford knew exactly how Krolock should be. It was the fact Crawford didn't want to do another dark character like the Phantom and the fact Professor Abronsius got the best laughs and Crawford wanted them. Hence Crawford turned Krolock into a bumbling clown with an Italian accent.

It's a massive shame, but you wouldn't be keeping me away if Tanz came to the UK, whoever was starring in it and regardless of what the critics had to say.

You know...thanks to Pud (although this would be news to him)...I did watch Steve Barton in Tanz...and you know what else...I LOVED his Krolock...it was brilliant...with this said...my attention wandered after about an hour or so...I kept on hearing the same 4 tunes or so over and over again...but maybe it's just me...granted...those were great tunes...but still and all...not enough to base an entire musical on...

It was still then an interpretation...that didn't work with the general idea and music...there is funny...and than there are bafoons and clowns...so...this wasn't funny...it was bafoon and clown...in the middle of the tragic narrative and dramatic music...stupid stupid stupid...

Professor was just a little comic relief...Americans are big on comic reliefs...but Krolock...argh...

Not really, because Crawford didn't misinterpret Krolock, he purposely chose to do Krolock differently. Had Crawford slightly changed the character then fair enough, but he completely changed him ass backwards. That's not an interpretation but a bast@rdisation.

I believe Crawford struggled on some of the notes wearing fangs and with him having an Italian accent he could (in his mind) get away with it. The Italian accent also made the Count more goofy, which you got to admit, did the trick.

It may have "helped" him get away with his singing difficulties, but Tanz with a goofy Count doesn't add up.

No it didn't...and it wasn't just goofy...it was like...well, bafoon is a good word...in general, I haven't seen the show but bits on youtube just seemed bizarre to me and that's the best word I can come up with...

So I don't think this musical will be resurrected any time soon on Broadway...

Buffoon is a better word

But yes, I know very well what it was like. I saw the show and have the emotional scars to prove it. I also have the DVDs in case anyone else wishes to be so afflicted ...
