Meat Loaf: ‘Simon Cowell doesn’t understand the principles of stage’
Meat Loaf has implied that Simon Cowell doesn’t have the credentials to judge performers on his talent shows. Simon currently judges hopefuls on his shows The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and American Idol. “I wanna talk to him really bad and say, ‘You have really good instincts but you’ve never walked a stage in your life’,” Meat Loaf told The Daily Record. “Before you start telling somebody what to do, you have to understand the principles of stage. Simon has been really lucky to be in the right place at the right time.” Though he recently acted as a judge on ITV1’s contest Popstar To Operastar, Meat Loaf claims that he isn’t a fan of the reality TV talent genre. “I hate watching pop reality shows,” he said. “I switch off.” http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/x-facto...ples-of-stage/ |

As a performer myself, I can say that I would hate to find myself under the view of Simon Cowell. When you perform, and you're not just doing it for the popularity / money / whatever, you pour your heart and soul into everything you're doing. To do that, then just get told 'Wow you sucked get off the stage', must be really disheartening. It's just a really low thing to do.
Long story short, I agree with everything Meat says, it's all right on the money. |

Trouble is, Simon doesn't say those things just to get a reaction, he's just being brutally honest. Brutal, maybe, but honest nonetheless.

I remember Cowell saying something in one interview along the lines of 'I'd rather have a thousand Kelly Clarkson's than one Bob Dylan. Singing poetry? I can't think of anything more boring.'
If that doesn't show you how anti-art, anti-diversity and anti-expression he is, I don't know what will. ~~~~ him, and the horse he rode in on. |

To be fair to Simon Cowell, he freely admits he's no performer and that his musical taste is very very mainstream ... he knows what he likes and what he likes appears to be in line with much of the music buying public, who buy into the image rather than the music itself. Love him or hate him he's doing alright for himself and is always pretty honest.

Simon Cowell has admitted that he makes entertainment, that's all it is, including his harsh reactions. This stuff is so produced it is crazy. He admitted in the Xtra Factor that he sat down with Louis Walsh watching audition tapes of Jedward. Then on the show he acts as if he has never seen them before. It is all about the extremes, those are interesting to watch. The 99% of audition and of people who may actually be able to become better artists are skipped.
If you look at the "artists" his shows have produced I'd say they are rather mediocre and nothing to right home about. Go to your local pubs/venues and you will see singers just as good and probably better as they are doing it for the love of singing not the whole "I want to be famous" attitude. Indeed Leona is an amazing singer and she has done well, but I would have thought that was more a fluke. Other artists his shows have produced are not really there for the long haul I feel. The real artists who are with us for the long haul usually have a more interesting or unique style, or as with artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Tom Jones and perhaps even Meat Loaf are able to reinvent themselves. This only comes from sheer determination, enthusiasm and hard work. When a puppet master is pulling the strings you can be thrown out at the first hurdle and that is what we see with Leon Jackson and countless other short lived "performers". The problem is though often they may be good singers, that is all there is to it. To capture an audience for several hours and remain popular for several years is something totally different. I wouldn't worry about it. We are already seeing that X Factor is starting to become boring and it will eventually be pulled as with Big Brother etc. People do get sick of over milking a cow(ell) eventually. |

It's not the fact that he produces bland, soulless mainstream pop that bothers me, or the fact that he is in no position to judge the talents of others.
Its that he is of the mind that his kind of music should be the only kind of music - that there should be 'a 1000 of one thing rather than 1 of another'. If you put a music TV channel on for a couple of hours you will see that this has very much become the case. Yes, there are a wealth of great artists working today in every genre, but it is often something of an effort to find them as they receive so little exposure in favour of Simon (and his ilk)'s drek. Lots of people simply flat out don't care about music anymore. 'Reality' culture is so prevalent on TV, newspapers, radio etc. that everything else has been pushed to the far outreaches where it goes unheard by the vast majority. I have heard people make blanket statements like 'no, I don't buy music anymore. It's all crap now anyway', which from both a fan and artist standpoint is very dispiriting. |

It's so very clear that much of the Xfactor feedback is choreographed for the sake of "entertaining" an audience, as is the selection process. I've known people with real talent turned down at the preliminary auditions because the programme makers want to include the bizarre and appalling for their audution shows. Simon Cowell is primarily interested in quick and short term successes to make money. People like Leona Lewis are a happy bonus. Bottom line, he knows he'll make money from whoever wins each series. Yes,those who will endure are those who can keep changing, developing and if necessary re-inventing themselves. Cowell is imo not particularly interested in finding those few who can do that .. why bother? There's another one coming up on the next series, another potential cash cow to milk as long as you can and then leave it to the knacker's yard and find a new one. The work doesn't need to be daring or inventive .. just go for the mainstream anodyne options that will make a fast buck on the back of the series' publicity. Thank God for performers like Meat .. I'd also thank God that the popularity of Xfactor is waning .. but I fear another one will always be coming up on the inside straight ![]() Caryl |

Simon Cowell is about commercial sucess of the artist...and as comercial criticism...his is most often than not spot on! Unfortunately, you do have to become a commercial success first and then becoming an artist you want to be later these days...I guess it really depends on what you want as an artist...if you do want fame and fortune...listen to Simon Cowell...

You should seriously consider switching to Google Chrome as by default it comes with spell correction whilst you type. You could learn a bit from it I think.
