Angus Young, Brian May and Carlos Santana. 3 guitarists that as soon as you hear anything they play, even if its something you've never heard before, you'll know its them. They have distinct styles.
When you go to an AC/DC concert, half of the entertainment is Angus all by himself, the man plays 13 minute solo's and looks like he could collapse at any moment! He's posessed! Not often is a guitarist the main attraction in a band and not the lead singer! Carlos Santana IS the show, all to himself. Master guitarist. Brian May, he and Freddy were/are the biggest names to come out of Queen, and he's a Doctor! Smart guy! Sent from my HTC Incredible S using Forum Runner |

It's hard to argue with most of these, although a couple of names I'm not too familiar with, so I'll need to take to YouTube to do a little research.
My own nominees were Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Clapton is generally regarded as one of the best guitarists in the world, though he's not really flashy to watch. The last time I saw him live, though, it dawned on me- he makes it look so darned easy! Here's one song from that performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtLhPeLB9bA Based on his legacy, I propose we induct old Slowhand. Stevie is Ray Vaughan is the one artist that I really wish I had gotten to see live, and sadly never did. I tend to favor blues players, and Vaughan was one of the best. He did a fantastic cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing", which is one of my favorite songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0zy0lqpOyc |

Now this is going to be a hard fought category
I'm nominated Brian May because he's one guy, even if you don't know the song and haven't been told it's him, what he plays you know who it is straight away. A rare thing for a musician to be so easily recognisable by their sound. I'm also standing for Jeff Healey. Although he had a short life with a lot of misfortune, that boy could play, and play with a passion that was incredable. He's a very worthy nominee. |

Joe Satriani
Not only because as a solo guitarist he is without equal but have you seen the people who were his students and are now revered as guitarists in their own right? To name some such as Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Rick Hunolt, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons, Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogan and Alex Skolnick. |
