The only thing I can think of is that it was in the middle of the Hair Of The Dog tour and Meat was playing Liverpool Pops two days later which, at the time, was a pretty big MLUKFC meet up. Lots of fans came from the US for that one so might have just been a popular time?

It wasn't 500 registered users logged in. It will have been 500 different connections to the database behind the site. When you look at who is online at anytime most of the users show as "guests" these are either people who haven't logged in or are automatic search spiders from the likes of Google etc.

There's a possibly that R. was doing some plumbing that night and that could also have exaggerated the records in the database.

IIRC that was the 1st night online with vBulletin (after migration from phpBB), so it's very much likely that Google and some other crawlers just picked up all new links.

Pushed to Feedback Central ...

meat was just about to start playing an outdoor gig at ravenhill in belfast, on the hair of the dog tour. but i believe the actual correct answer (if i rem what R said) is that was the first time the site became visible to lots of search engine spybot things... or something
