REFLECTIONS ON MEAT LOAF'S CAREER....
I remember watching Top of the Pops as a kid with my sister having never heard of Meat Loaf and this video came on...the song was called "I Do Anything for Love...". It completely memorised me and week after week i watch top of the Pops and it was still number one. That Christmas I got Bat out Of hell on cassette for my Christmas present - my first ever album. To this day I still think it is the best album I have ever heard.
A few months later I did a bit of research and heard this fat guy with long hair called Meat Loaf had done an album called Bat Out of Hell in 1977. So i asked my Mum and Dad if I could have the original bat album for my birthday - wow what a album. Next thing I know Welcome to the Neighbourhood came out. This was clearly aimed to sound like Bat 2. Obviously it wasn't as good but it was still a great album. I went to see Meat live in concert on his tour and he blew me away - what a voice, what a performance. I loved his chemistry with Patti Russo (we miss Patti). I hated how Meat neglected his music career to get involved in films but hey he obviously enjoyed acting. The Greatest Hits album was a bit lazy but hey we got another tour out of it. I liked Couldn't Have Said it Better album especially his incredible duet with Patti. This should have been a big hit but by now youngsters were moving on to dance and pop. Bat 3....in my opinion its a great album. Okay it would probably been better with Steinman but songs like Blind as a Bat are up there with the very best songs of Meat's career. And the best tour I have ever seen is definitely The Three Bats tour. Meat was truly epic on this tour and sounded like a rock superstar night after night. Hang Cool another good album but lacked a single. I'm afraid to say Hell in a Handbasket and Braver Than We Are in my opinion are weak albums when you rate them against albums from Bat 2 onwards. We always thought we may one day get another album like Bat 1 or Bat 2 with number ones but it didn't happen. But that is what makes Meat Loaf so great....on one hand we think he's a genius with an incredible voice with incredible albums. Then on the other hand he does something out of left field like walk off stage, collapse or shout abuse at us on this forum. He is real and that is why we love him. Although Meat is saying this his last album and he won't tour again...do we believe him....do we heck! |

I think the beauty of opinion is that we are allowed to express it. It was an honest opinion, delivered in a respectful manner. nightinr expressed themselves perfectly, and made it clear it was just their opinion, not a categorical statement. I think maybe we should be more careful about criticizing other people for having an opinion. But that's just me.

Sorry if I offended anybody with my honest reflections on my story as a Meat fan. I try to be rational and not just say everything Meat does is brilliant.
I find this forum at times to be quite aggressive to non "die-hards". Surely we can all agree to disagree at times? It is quite unwelcoming to new potential members. I repeat I apologise for any offence. |

I don't think it was the opinion so much as the 'inaccuracies' that were being contested.

Don't take it personally -- it's more than cool with me
However: 1, you say that you bought Bat Out Of Hell twice (yeah, I know you meant Bat 2 the first time, but still...). 2, How was the best of album 'lazy'? Best Of albums are usually just that -- a collection of well known, previously released tracks. This one had two new songs and a remix, not to mention an extensive world tour. 3. HCTB did have a lead single (with a video). I'm going to stop at 3 -- but hey, you asked! |

1. Apologies I missed "2" off the sentence.
2. I dont like Greatest Hits albums. Meat was still commercial at this time and in my opinion should have worked on a fresh material. 3. I meant Hang Cool lacked a killer single. I thought it was a very good album but lacked a top notch song to put the cherry on the cake. |

I really don't like how this thread has been hi-jacked by people trying to demean opinions of people who don't post regularly. The purpose of this thread was for people to share their highlights of Meat's career....
Without new members this forum will die. Tonight you have lost me as a forum member due to the passive aggressive nature of forum members. Good luck to you all and enjoy listening to Meat's great music. |
