Halloween month is coming: your horror top 10

Would be nice to see the diversity in taste

I'll start of

1. Halloween 1978 (My absolute favorite horror movie and in my top 5 favorite movies of all time)
2. Poltergeist 1982
3. Conjuring (1 and 2) Like them both equally
4. The Thing 1980
5. The Shining 1980
6. Alien 1979
7. An American Werewolf in London (1981)
8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974
9. Evil Dead 1981
10. a Nightmare on Elmstreet 1984

Not in my top ten but worth to acknowledge: The Exorcist 1973

As you can tell from my list, I'm from the 70's. Doesn't mean I don't like current horror movies though.

I think it's really hard for me to compile a list but it would probably include about 5 or 6 from your list anyway.However I'd like to see most of those movies again in your list to form an honest rather than nostalgic opinion.
It's been a long time since I've seen Halloween but I did always really like John Carpenter's films, also the fact he often made the music himself too!

I really liked: Conjuring 2 (Don't think I saw part 1!), Poltergeist 82, The Shining, Alien (very scary indeed, very realistic looking still and eerie), Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Nightmare on Elm Street was pretty good but the sequels went a bit mad. Remember seeing the Wes Craven New Nightmare one during an all night horror cinema event in Haarlem, Netherlands! 1996 or so.

I watched Dark Skies on Netflix the other day. About alien abduction. Thought it was pretty good.

First time I saw Dead End (2003) in the cinema I thought it was really good. Not so much on repeat viewing.
Same goes for The Fourth Kind. Probably freaked out the most during those two movies in the cinemas. Such scary movies definitely work better in the cinema.
Enjoyed the recent Oculus. It was ok too.

The remakes of Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street were terrible. Poltergeist remake especially was a total and utter joke. Couldn't believe how bad it was!

Also like the simplicity of some of the Paranormal Activity movies.
A terrible spin off movie idea from that was "Ouija". Like watching a terrible teenage tv series. Awful acting and couldn't really finish it. Bleh.

6. Paranormal Activity 1&2. They're both equally as good from what I remember.

I also really like Dawn of the Dead 1978 but it's not really scary to me. More just enjoyable. It would probably go near the top of the list I guess... Again the remake of that was awful. I don't like the rage zombie approach at all.

But you celebrate it 5th December right? Pakjesavond (present evening). And in Belgium it is 6th December.
It's a bit like how in The States Christmas Eve is almost a bigger deal than Christmas Day I guess.

Also Dutch director Dick Maas made some horrors including one about Sinterklaas which looks a bit crap. He also did De Lift (The elevator) which is probably one of his best. The American remake he did Down/The Shaft was crap but eerily did predict Osama Bin Laden would/could strike NYC again before 9/11 .

I do like how the idea of how Sinterklaas' workers taking bad children away in sacks can be considered quite a scary thing and could have made a really good scary movie. Too bad the Sinterklaas / Zwarte Piet stuff has almost been completely destroyed in recent years by politically correct crap from people who see racism in absolutely everything. Those political correct assholes should have been taken away in sacks years ago.

Basically 'Sint' the dutch horror, is a nod to Halloween. With even a few 'Halloween kills' in them. For a Nederhorror I actually like that one The Piet discussion actually has this country quite divided. I don't get it. It's harmless tradition unless you WANT to read more into it. Oh well.

Btw, because I started the topic I feel I have the right to a B List. Actually they are technically Horror movies that aren't scary.

With Halloween I am obvious a big fan of the original. But I love Halloween II also. It's a good sequel imo

I think that either I - II - H20 make a perfect ending storyline for the series. But I - II - IV could also work as a storyline and I prefer Halloween IV over H20. (I Hate the Rob Zombie ones). Never was a fan of the thorn set up. I'm happy they didn't continue that path.

Nightmare on Elmstreet. I only really like the original one. New Nightmare is decent though. And when I was younger part 3 was amongst my favorites. Freddy vs Jason would perhaps be my third ranked Elmstreet movie. No fan of 2.

2 has had a pretty bad rap ever since the 80s. I used to agree with this. But over time, and with a different perspective, it actually holds up as one of the stand out Elm Street films (in a good way).

I must admit that I haven't watched it in ages. Perhaps I should give it a go somewhere during October Never was a big Freddy fan to begin with, though.
