BOOH Marketing

While reading through Meat's autobiography, I found that Jim Steinman was not happy with Meat's name being at the top of the BOOH album cover. It was suggested that the album be called something like "Meat & Jimmy - BOOH" or "Jimmy & Meat - BOOH".

Now, I think this is interesting. Do you guys think that the naming of the album would have had an affect on its sales, or current cult status? Would the music have found its audience regardless? Does the whole effetc rely on having that simple name at the forefront - "MEAT LOAF"?

Just a little something that occured to me. Let me know what you think.

I feel personally that to have Meat Loaf as the main artist title, does carry weight

(sorry about the pun unintentional). I also believe that if Bat out of Hell hadn't been released with Meats name to the fore front, and Jim Steinmans in smaller case, maybe it would have taken a great deal longer to break through and be the worldwide success it was, and still is today. Although Meat Loafs name is synomous with Jim Steinman, Meat is able to release material using other composers and lyricists and still find success. Whereas Jim Steinman is responsible for his own music and lyrics, with no one else involved.

Have you tried Ebay? They usually alway have it on there.

And to answer Mellis, i really don't think that it would have done half as well as it has done had Meat's name not been on the front. Not to take anything away from Steinman - the Man's a genius, but when someone thinks of BOOH, the first person they think of is Meat, not Jim. Just the way it is, i'm afraid.

Hmm. The autobiography (stones at the ready) I can honestly say I didn't like it. It seemed tos kip over some important issues, and seemed inexcuasably brief. However, this is after reading the Brian Wilson autobiograph (buy this now!) so Mr. Loaf's autobiography seemd rather tame in compariosn, but that's just me.

In answer to the question, it wouldn't have sold a 100 copies.

Anyway, I found the Brian Wilson autobiography to be one of the most inspiring things I've ever read. Very frank, disturbing at times, but a brilliant man and book all the same.

I can see that Jim would feel kinda 'deprived' of attention when just Meat's name showed on the record in big lettering. He's had as much (and likely even more) input in the making of Bat as Meat. They were in it together, and from the book I get a kind of 'brotherhood'/co-operation vibe.

I don't think it would have had an effect on the sales. It would have effected what came behind it. If Bat was put out as "Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman" it would have been that: Meat and Jim. It's done before: Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby and Nash, etc. Let the music do the talking.
What in this case would have happened after Bat is anybody's guess. Maybe Meat wouldn't have lost his voice. Maybe Jim wouldn't have lost his scrapbook and 'Renegade Angel' would have been made. Who knows?

An interesting question.
Perhaps if Jimmy's name was as big as Meat's on the album there would never have been that rift between them.With a happier working relationship,maybe Meat wouldn't have lost his voice and could have recorded Bad For Good.They could have continued to collaberate for many years.

But on the other hand,had things not happened the way they did,things could have gone very badly.Jimmy and Meat could have had an argument that they were never able to recover from.Bat II might not ever happened.Meat would still be playing small clubs in the US with the occasional European appearance.

I'm just happy that things happened the way they did.There were bad times,but it's that exact chain of events,both good and bad,that brought us to this present reality.I'm happy with this reality

BTW.I thought it was great the way Jimmy stood up for Meat on the Classic Albums vid,when he talked about when Meat was in tears on the phone to David Sonenberg trying to get more recognition for Jimmy.

It should have been Meat and Jim on the cover. Then there was no fight at all. and like us: the fans, we are saying all the time "Meat and Jim". So, i think the whole world could say Meat and Jim.

I really loved the Biography as well. Funny story, I bought it when it first came out and I was still a VEry poor university student. I had to choose between groceries and the book-I bought the book

Talk about Pavlovian conditioning, though, every time I read a little bit of it over again, I am STARVING!!

i found the autobiography very open and also funny in parts.
i got it when it first came out after he had been on book club on sky
news.
it took ages to order from our main shop, and then my daughter won an autographed copy last year!
but personally i think the book is great.

Bart, I have to agree with you and Mouse.

What's done is done, Meat did stand up for Jim, he went on to gain more fame because of the way it was promoted, not Meat's call. Who knows what would have happened if they were listed equally. Ever wonder why he has a real problem with the "music industry" since? They are still f...ing over the artists, sad thing. Sorry to see what happened over the years, but these are human beings. Just so glad it's all behind them.

When Meat was introducing the band last week in Cleveland, he did a long intro for Kasim, mentioned all those that worked on Bat, Jim and Todd et al. First time I've seen that at a concert.
