does anyone think there is any difference between liking an artist ( not just meat)and worshipping them.does anyone think some poeple go too far with liking artists( not just meat) and turn it into more.if some people spend tons of money flying halfway around the world to see there favourite performer( not just meat) have they got more money than sense.why cant some people just like an artists music and see them maybe once in a year rather than dedicate the whole of there life following them around.

Well, there have been cases where a fan was stalking an artist, that's wrong of course. As for spending tons of money: it is not for me to say where people should spend their money on. You can only spend a dollar or euro once, so everybody chooses how to spend it.
I myself like Meat, love the music and hope to see him twice this tour. ![]() |

As much as I would love to fly over to Europe and see Meat during that part of the tour, I know it's impossible. I'm very happy that I got to see him when I did in the U.S., and thinking that he might come back my way again some time gives me something to look forward to ![]() Vicki |

If I am right in thinking that Plymboy is arguing against this type of behaivior, I'll agree. I think dedication so much time to one particular artist, and not giving others a fair hearing, or even, undeservedly placing one artist on a pedastal above others (XX's the best! No one like XX etc) is a pretty closed minded thing to do. But I'm pretty clear cut on my views of music, whadayagonnado?

I don't know Eyeore. I absolutely love Meats' music and I listen to it all the time but I still give other artists a fair hearing. Just because I put him on a pedastal doesn't mean that I compare everyone else to him. He is in a class all of his own

I think everyone in Life has an idol in which money is spent on tickets, merchandise etc. We normally choose an idol or have a fasination with one subject because it truly reflects our own lifes maybe cause it takes us away from reality or when we young or happy. I know people dont just do it in music but also movies and Tv etc. People have fasinations with shows or characters from shows ie People who collect Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny items . And I tink it is really normal and healthy to a degree. I place Meatloaf on a pederstal because he truly reflects my life and his music seems like its a part of my life. And yes I spend lots of money on items related to meatloaf. I also think that people dont just do one particular person or era. I also like many of the 70s groups like the Eagles and so on. So I dont think there is nothing wrong with it as also society also encourages this kind of action with autograph hounds and movie posters or even clothing lines froim that star.

Of course there is a distinct difference between lking an artist and worshiping them. I like Catatonia, but not nearly as much as i like Meat. But perhaps that has to do more with how thier music has related to my life.
For example, i often associate Catatonia with the days i spent in university, having a laugh with mates, generally good times. Whenever i listen to them now, it brings a smile to my face at the antics we used to get up to. To me, that music is my feel-good stuff. Now Meat, on the other hand, although he's been there for the good times, such as births, marraiges, parties and the like, i will always associate some of his songs with some of the less happy times of my life, but i don't mean it in a bad way, not at all, it's just, and i know this sounds stupid, but his music, and therefore Meat himself through his music, has seen me through some of the worst times too. But the important thing is, that with Meat's help, i came through them. Therefore, it equates, in my mind at least, that Meat has played a much more important role in my life. Maybe i'm getting this out all wrong and coming across like some kind of psycho - that's definately NOT my intenetion, but when asking do i just like Meat or do i idolise and worhip him, i'm not ashamed to admit that yes, i suppose do idolise and worship him. Of course, people can take this too far though - i would never dream of say, stalking the poor man and making his life, and his loved ones lives unhappy - that would be completely insane. But the reverse of that, i can honestly say that if i had the kind of life where money was no object at all, i would, quite happily, love to follow Meat around on tour. See him perform every night - but that's just me being idealistic, i know that is never going to happen. Yes, i'm quite happy to pay whatever it costs to get the new Meat Loaf CD or any kind of memorabillia from one of his shows, but i'm also aware that i do have a life outside of Meat - one where my children need nappies and christmas toys buying. I think, in the end, it's all about putting it into perspective. Yes, i idolise Meat, and i'm not ashamed to admit it. He's a big part of my life, and i love it. |

![]() ![]() And as for some fans, I only find it a bit annoying to follow artists to hotels etc., and to fly across the globe to see them perform. But again, that's just my own opinion, and if people like doing that, they should. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'm seeming biased here, so I'll iron out my views, I do have an idol. Not in terms that I worhip them, but I have a great deal of respect for that person. Some of you know this person to be Steven Morrissey. Morrissey for short. Anyway, this guy has had an enormous impact on my life, and I I think he great. That's fine. But when you asmit that something said person does, isn't that good, or that someone does it better, I think it becomes less a matter of taste and more of ignorance, (Not that I'm calling any of you ignorant, hey, I like Meat too

![]() ![]() If money were no object I would probibily reserve front row tickets for every show round the world, and have a personal limo and private plane to get me to them. Personally,I can't afford a couple of thousand pounds to spend on a tour. But if I were a millionaire I wouldn't think twice about spending a couple of grand ![]() Am I obsesed with Meat?I would have to say yes,to an extent.Every day I visit his fan club speaking to fans around the world with a common interest. It's a rare day that I don't listen to at least one of his albums.I love collecting memerobillia.I grew my hair long and started to sing. Is it healthy?I don't see why not.Meat's music gives me much pleasure and asks very little in return. As an entertainer,i'm lucky that my work is basically done at the weekends and mostly at night. This leaves me a lot of free time to dedicate to my passion and appreciation of the works of IMHO the greatest singer and entertainer of our time ![]() I think it would get to the unhealthy stage if somebody were to give up their job to have more time to spend on Meat.Or if they decided to live on bread and water for a week just to be able to afford that extra nice item on e bay ![]() If I see something really nice for sale,i'll try to work my budget to see if I can afford it,but as for going without food, drink, ciggs for a week,I would do anything for Meat, but I won't do that ![]() I think the true obsesives are the people who say they're not.Obsesives very rarely think their is anything strange or wrong in their behaviour. To them it's the most natural thing in the world. If you can acknowlege the effect that Meat (or whoever) has on your everyday life, and control it,then I think your pretty safe ![]() ![]() While we're on the subject, stalkers. That is a pattern of behaviour that is completly alien to me ![]() ![]() I always think it's funny when I hear on the news that someone was nearly attacked by a crazed FAN with a knife ![]() ![]() |

I have to say that I agree with Flying Mouse and Heat on this one. I am a dedicated fan. If I have the money, i will go to a concert/buy an album/buy a piece of memorabilia. However the key difference between "normal" fan-behaviour and an obsession is all about keeping a view on reality!!
I am sure that meat does not give a flying fig who I am!! If I ever got to the point where i was convinced that Meat was a "friend" then I would have blurred the line between reality and fantasy. To an extent, we must all consider ourselves to have gone from liking the music of meat to a mild form of worship. After all, most of us regularly pop in here to discuss Meat with other like-minded folk or will go out and buy albums or classic tracks. However, i am sure that 99.9% or us listen to other srtists and have other activites, you only have to view the "What are you listening to" topic in Off-Topic to see how varied our tastes are. If no-one preferred one artist above others then we would not have fan-clubs or fanzines. The fans whose behaviour i would find odd are the ones who are not willing to recognise that an artist can do things that are below their usual standard and will not accept any form of criticism of an artist. If I won the lotto then i probably would go to any Meat concerts I could or buy any memorabilia, but I am willing to bet good money that I would also go see other artists and buy other things. Anyway, this is just my two cents worth!! Also, I personally cannot understand why people get to the point where they would be willing to stalk, attack or otherwise upset the person they claim to like. (Apologies if this reply seems rather disjointed!! I was writing it on the fly as it were!!) |

There's so much more to explore... I'm just starting to dig the whole classical scene, and I've been into metal, (hard-/prog-/symphonic) rock and (strange enough) Dutch pop-rock for as long as I've been into music. I think I would do myself a disservice if I only listened to one or a few artists... But none-the-less, I would consider myself a Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman fan. A compulsive completist, even. Just look at my website for a quick glance at my collection. But I have the same kind of compulsiveness for some other bands/artist. Arjen Lucassen for example. I simply adore his work with Ayreon and Star One. And that introduced me to some other artists, I most likely wouldn't have found myself... what's the point of all this? Keep your mind and ears open... Quote:

About 3 years ago, I was working in a dead end job at the local University. Yes, it was boring, but the people were great, and it paid the bills :) Everything was fine until I "discovered" Meat and started working on our ROL website. I didn't realize it at the time, but what started out as a fun hobby soon became an obsession ... I would come home from work every night at 5:00 p.m., skip dinner, and work on the web site until 3 or 4:00 a.m. the next morning. I lost a lot of weight .. which I needed to anyway .... but only got about 3-4 hours of sleep every night, and it soon started affecting my job. Because I was bored at work, I spent too much time answering my personal emails and telling everyone who would listen to me about Meat and the website. It got to the point that my supervisor was convinced I had ADT (attention deficit disorder) ... but my Doctor told me I was going through a mild depression and put me on medication. Maybe it was the medication that helped ... I don't know. I was finally able to put everything into perspective, started concentrating on work, and left Meat and the site at home, so to speak. But unfortunately, it was too little too late, and I decided to resign from the University before my supervisor had to give me a very bad evaluation and put a permanent black mark on my record. Even though my "obsession" cost me my job, but it also helped me change my life. I didn't have another job lined up, so I told everyone that I was going to work for my parents part time, and pursue website design on the side. But then September 11th hit, business took off, and I realized that my place was working with them full-time at the store. I still keep in contact with my friends from the University, and sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I could have just found another job there. But to be honest, I couldn't go back to working in an office ... I love dealing with customers, and need to stay in retail sales. After the recent flood at the store, chatting with everyone here on the forum, listening to Meat's music as often as I can, and doing whatever I can to support the new CD has given me a necessary escape from reality. So yes, my "obsession" has come back again. And if it remains for a little while so be it .... but once we can get back on our feet and get everything up and running at the store again, I'll put everything back into perspective again. Thank you for letting me get this off my chest .... and I really hope I didn't bore you too much :) Vicki |

Interesting discussion
![]() The rest: I listen to a lot of groups/artists/performers. There's really a lot that I like to listen to. I just like Meat better, he's my favo. I think, because he has a song for every mood I'm in. I come here almost every day. I can't keep up with all the topics, but I pick a few and read them and respond. I like to talk to other Meat fans from all over the world. And I like the big guy enough to dedicate a website and create a forum for the Dutchies. Didn't think that was going to work, was just something I tried and it snowballed from there.... Anyway, my visits here are because I like the people hanging out on mlukfc. Not because Fire Ball sometimes posts here. Don't get me wrong, but I love the music and the voice and the performance. I like Meat as a person but the one I love is my hubby ![]() ![]() |
