Worry not - the duality of meaning of many words is a source of endless humour to Brits.......is this lack of understanding the basis of the oft-repeated statement that continentals lack a sense of humour?

Woah!
I had to read this sentence three (3) times to understand it.
And the answer - at least in my case - is no.

You say what? A lack of sense of humour on the continent? LOL
We dutch have a great sense of humour, i think this European continent has a great sense of humour. I mean, look what's happening around here, it's just humour.

No, what i mean is that you English people have a strange humour, but it's funny, like fawlty towers or bottom. Strange, but great humor. :P

I've had my favourite joke ....

the three legged dog who walks into the saloon bar at the OK Coral who
when asked by the bar tender what he's doing there replies

"Ah'm looking fer the man who shot my paw"

read out on Drive on BBC Radio 5 Live, with full credits and accompanying groans from the presenters
