An important Meat Loaf question.
It's about the clothes Meat wears on stage.
What do they represent? why does he wear them? and that red cloth on his hand at every concert what does that represent? I have never heard anyway mention this, and I don't know why he wears that suit does anyone one here know? I saw to "HELL AND BACK" the film and the story about the red cloth is: He was preforming on stage one night and his wife Leslie if I am correct handed him a red cloth because he was sweating all over the place. But I thought at first that the cloth was his mothers and that's why he always kept it with him on stage. As for the suit and stuff, I have know idea why he wears it, but there is a reason behind it there has to be. Had I been at the VH-1 storytellers show I would have asked him about it. So I thought I would ask people about it here. |

The red hanky gimmick I believe started off as an accident. Meat was given it at one of his early performances to wipe his brow, but the audience thought it was part of the act and it's stuck ever since. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I'm lead to believe. Pud |

Meat's clothes
cos the other thread is locked I'll answer Steve's question here. Meat was given the red cloth to wipe his brow during an early performance and kept it as part of his act to stop sweat running in his eyes throughout the show.
His clothes are just for theatrical effect- both Steinman and Meat said of the Meat Loaf character that he was a rock and roll Pavarotti- I figure that's where the suit came from though I don't know why it became really gothic for Bat II, probs just part of the act, no meaning behind it. |

I thought it had something to do with Pavarotti alright.
They sang together did'nt they? There is a recording out there some where, I don't know where. I only saw a picture of them preforming. Thanks very much Jaymze. |

yeah they sang on Pavarittu and Friends, they both sang Back To Sorrento or something like that and Meat sang Heaven Can Wait. U can buy it on the Pavarotti and Friends boxset DVD but I think it's about a hundred notes- I don't think it would be worth it for one version of Heaven Can Wait.

I thought he changed his stage clothes from white shirt black waistcoat to black shirt black waistcoat cos he was advised it wouldn't show his size so much. I'm not sure where i heard this so it might not even be true!

You might have a point there djfierce. Just like vertical stripes on garment gives the illusion of being thinner and horizontal stripes (hoops) gives the appearance of being bigger. That's why big women who wear striped lycra pants should be locked up

snooker waist coat
I actually thought this myself when I saw him wearing all black. I also read he takes a stylist with him everywhere nowadays- not very rock is it. Personnally I prefered his old theatrical outfits to the snooker player look he now sports.

He does comment on the MSO DVD that his choice of clothes especially the black and gold waist coat make him look 'fat'.
The black shirt he wore in 2005 made him look better proportioned! I like the 69 jacket he wears ( there is a story behind it but I can't remember it ). His main stage dress seems to be the black velvet(?) coat. I guess there is some point to the things he wears, but I don't know what. |

I love the ending to that song on the MSO DVD/CD. Its funny. Meats voice is great too. I was very impressed. |

Well then join the "BLACK VELVET BAND"
I for one like the leather jackets the jeans and a cool pair of sunglasses similar to what Jim Steinman wears the only that I am missing is long grey hair. But maybe I might find some grey hair dye out there. |

Speaking of Meat's velvet coat, here's a funny story for you ... the group of us from the M&G were backstage in Atlantic City. We had just finished the tour, and were waiting for our chances to talk to Meat. I was talking to Kelly (from Fanfire) when I saw the wardrobe mistress pulling coats off a rack for Meat ..... when she pulled down the velvet coat, I just stood there saying "Wow." John Micheli came walking towards me, stopped, and turned around ... Kelly laughed and jokingly said "she's not saying that to you John". He said "I know ... I just wanted to see what she was talking about .. " I burst out laughing, pointed to the coat and said .. "there's just something about velvet ..." He just rolled his eyes at me, shook his head and kept right on walking ... Vicki |
