In the VH1 Storytellers DVD, Meat says Bat Out of Hell was written for the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Psycho. However, I don't remember Steinman getting any credit for the song in the movie. In fact, the song was never even used! Besides, Steinman was what, 12 yrs old when the movie was made? What did Meat mean by that statement?

It's a tongue-in-cheek comment made by Meat Loaf because of the lyrical content in the song.
There’s a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye And a blade shining oh so bright There’s evil in the air and there’s thunder in the sky And a killer’s on the bloodshot streets A lot of what Meat says is take too literally and misinterpretted as fact, when it shouldn't be. Meat likes spinning a good yarn just like Steinman likes telling one. Pud ![]() |

There's a quote by Meat in the The Phenomenology Of Excess book:
"We're both (Meat & Jim) into films, like "Bat Out Of Hell" to Jimmy was like the beginning of "Psycho". His songs are visions in his head. It's like rolling films in our heads when he writes and I perform". - Meat Loaf 1978. Diane |

My take on what Meat has said about BOOH and the film Pycho was that Jim wrote it with the film (which was already released for some considerable time) in mind. It was Jim's and Meat's inspiration for the sheer passion of the song. I don't know too many people who were around at the time of the film's release who weren't in some way touched by it's content.
I think Pud has hit the nail right on the head too in saying that Meat's words are often taken too literally. We all tend to overanalyse his work and his words. Just goes to show the power of the man's persona on our lives. ![]() |

The comment in Storytellers was actually along the lines of Jim wrote BOOH "about" Psycho not actually "for" Psycho... :)

Always in surveys, my favourite films are: Psycho and The Wizard Of Oz. And Psycho does read like one of Steinman's musicals or something
