Explanation! (I'm a spoilsport)
If it's any help, this illusion occurs because the receptors in the eyes that identify colour/shade are rather limited and specifically located. When looking straight ahead, you only see the colour in that field of vision, and the brain is actually "filling in" the colours it thinks you should be seeing on the sides, outside of the primary line of vision.
