This is the Best Place for advise sooo....
Hey everyone! I just bought a 1971 Us realease of Stoney and Meat Loaf, Never Opened, never played. It Still Has the shrinkwrap on it.... And im woundering.... What should I do with it? I'm almost afraid to open and play it! Should I record it on My Computer? Should I leave it in its original wrapping to save the value? Or should i play it casually?

Well if you open it then it gets devauled.....then again I don't like to leave collectors items in boxs....Your choice really...If it was me I'd open it just cut the plastic along where the record comes out.

It's all up to you, but here are some points for consideration:
A: How do you know that it's still in the original shrinkwrap? It's quite possible that someone rewrapped it. B: Do you want to buy an used copy to play? C: What's the point of having a record if you're not gonna play it? |

i think the last point is the best
If you want to preserve it the best way possible then open it, and play it the once to record it, then just listen to the recording, saving it from any possible damage |

To be honest, I think that you should have avoided the item if you have an ethical issue wether to open it or not.
Yes, why buy a record you never intend to open?, but an unopened copy of the 71 S&ML isn't something you see every day. I have an unopened packet of "Indian backed playing cards" manufactured for Woolworths in either the 60's or 70's (I forget which now). These are REALLY nice playing cards to work with, especially when coated with zinc sterate (the fans are something else) but I CANNOT bring myself to open that pack. I don't think I ever intend on doing so. I do believe that a rare item should be preserved. One of my fav sayings on the collecting hobby is that "we do not own these things, even though we have paid money for them.It is merely our privaledge to take care of them for the future generations". My advice, either keep it as an unoped item, or buy an already opened copy and sell it on e bay to someone who might value it for what it is. |

I second that Chris !
I am a collector. I now have a fair amount of Picture Discs but I cannot bring myself to play them for fear of wrecking the picture, I think they are pretty for example I have an unplayed picture "7 of "Runnin' For The Red Light", and in it's original case, then I have earlier ones such as "Modern Girl", "If You Really Want To" etc. Too many to name but that is me, I personally wouldn't play it but this is tough I might just slit it so I could get the record out and listen. I have this but it wasn't sealed, I love it it's fantastic. Did I mention I also have this from 1987... I think this is rare! Last edited by MeatGrl1; 30 Mar 2007 at 03:36. |

I personally wouldnt see any reason in buying something I havent heard (like these interviews), and then not listening to them. It's something else with an item you already know...lets say a picture disc of BOOH or Bat2...but then again, that's just me.

Well what if you could play the records once more and put them on to cd some how Would you do that? That way you are not going to ruin the album.

Good point somewhere above...we really don't know if the album wasn't open before and then re-sealed...that is still a big question...although my shrink wrap is yellowed...guess still doesn't prove anything at the end of the day... |

no offence to anyone really!
But to me it boils down to whether you're a fan or a collector. I am a fan first then a collector of his items, I could never justify owning something i never listened to, Meat and Stoney went to alot of trouble to record that vinyl for people to listen to so to me it is a tad disrespectful to not appreciate what they made together imo. If the potential value bothers you then dont open it, but if you bought it because you wanted that album as you havent heard it before or dont have it already then play it. Playing it just once to record it will still leave it in immaculate condition and certainly in better shape than most old vinyls out there There is no right answer, it just depends on your perspective and reason for buying it. If i saw something in its original packaging that i already have and used AND liked, then i would buy it for collector purposes but i certainly wouldnt buy something i dont have then not play it at all. That doesnt make sense to me as a fan! Playing a picture disc will not affect the picture unless you plan on sitting there digging a needle into it so playing it once to hear what you have never heard wont hurt one bit! If i was an artist i wouldnt be that impressed if one of my fans said 'i have all your old stuff but i never listened to it!' my reply would be simple 'you what! that's what i made it for! for you to listen to!' but thats just me My view is this: Records were made to make music not fill draws! I get the impression here, that you can listen to a record only once, then the needle destroyed it forever.
Guys, for decades people had nothing but vinyl records, and what the hell do you think they did with them??? Right, THEY PLAYED THEM! We have many of my fathers favourite vinyl records from the 60s here at home, which he play approx 1000 times, and the sound is still good. You got a few crackles here and there, but does that really affect the quality? Maybe, but on the other hand I heard TONS of mp3 recordings much worse than these records! It wont break from playing one, two, or ten times! If it would be as I picture it from comments like these, people must have had a VERY expensive life, always buying the same record again and again and again.... Sorry, had to get it off my chest.....pooh No offence to anybody, of course |
